In Europe they start the floors with the “main floor” being the ground level and the next floor up being the “first floor.” In the States, “main floor” is done away with and that is called the “first floor.”

Naming the first floor in America the ground floor elsewhere is pretty common, especially in Europe, from what I understand.

The first floor and main floor thing in the granny game is a thing in France (and maybe other countries). They call the lowest floor the ground floor and the floor above that the first floor

In Ireland and I presume others, what Americans call the first floor is the ground floor and the “second floor” is the first floor. Makes sense to me
