To be fair in the UK we often call it the ground floor, then the first floor. At my college weirdly some of the elevators had the first floor/second floor system even though the signage and room numbers followed the other system

to be fair in England we call the bottom floor the “ground floor”, and then the numbering begins on floors above that. Above the ground floor is the first floor, above that is the second floor, etc.

Outside the USA the 1st floor is often called ground or main and what Americans would call the second floor is called the first floor.
