one thing i learned after soaking in months of youtubers getting giddy with excitement over how amazing and powerful the M1 mac book pro was…seems like a bunch of hype that may be backed up by some benchmark test, but in the real world, i am sitting here in utter disappointment. i have a work computer that is a mid 2015 macbook pro retina with 16 gigs of ram, 2.8nghz quad core intel core i7 and an intel iris pro graphics. I got my new macbook pro after watching all these youtuber get all lathered up by the ‘insane” performance, I got a middle of the road m1 macbook pro, 16 gb ram, 16 core gpu blah blah blah… so i decide to try a 3d program, i was not up for figuring out blender just yet as it is my first time with 3d. so i ke-t it simple..adobe dimensions…made a fairly simple chair design, and out put it at a large size 5000 x 4000 pixels. my first run on the m1 was over 54 minutes….so i was disappointed… i then took the same dimensions file, loaded it on my mid 2015 retina mack book pro and went head to head with the same render, 49 minutes… For the most part, in my day to day work as a graphic designer, i have not noticed any significant boost in performance or productivity with the M1. i will certainly avoid getting sucked into the youtuber fervor in the future. i am guessing everyone will tell me that i need to use a particular software to optimize the performance, but i would have at least expected my new M1 would have been faster at the same task.

I got a macbook pro 2nd hand with a 500gb drive, having a cooling fan was one reason for choosing it. Not a fan of apple touch bar but it’s there. Not keen on the notch on top end laptops nothing clean about that design and would annoy me.

i think over time the MBP will be the best choice just because you can always rely on fans for cooling down your machine and keep good performances even when your hardware is outdated and you need to ‘squeeze’ your machine to make it work . I might be wrong but that’s something to keep in mind, especially if you are buying it now (maybe an used copy in good conditions like i did) and you are planning to keep it for a long time , also you can get really good deals and pay like 800$ for an used copy ( i bought mine for 790$ still under warranty and 17 cycles of charge )

Only reason I recently bought the 13 inch M1 Pro was because Best Buy is having a sale where instead of the 13 inch being $1,300, it is $1,049 for the 512GB SSD. The M1 Air was only $100 less so I feel like the Pro was the ABSOLUTE best financial decision in this case. A steal!

Buying a laptop with no fans it’s cool (see what I did there?) if you plan on upgrading the laptop in 1-2-3 years tops and you are not doing any sustained load while you have it.
