A 20 minute 4k video in 15ish minutes? Yeah, going for 2TB ssd would have been a good call—I did—but I think you’d probably have been better off going for the Max chip even before that. I output 4k hour long, multicam (1 h.265, 1 h.264, 2 separate audio tracks) to h.265 4k with grading and transitions on a weekly basis. OMG! 12 minutes!

I knew I wanted the 2 encoders for sure! Worth it for me. Very, very happy!

Great review as always! I agree with having a bigger SSD. I like to have FCP copy all my media into the internal library because I am forever deleting media with Finder not remembering it was being used by FCP. And that’s the point. FCP libraries grow _Like Magic!_ I have a 512G SSD in my M1 MacBook and am constantly deleting generated clips of projects I’m not currently working on. Then when I go back to other projects the clips have to be regenerated. Also, I always work with a library on my MacBook instead of on the plethora of external drives because one of those externals is my Time Machine so I know my projects are always backed up. Thanks for this review.

Well, a 2013 computer is 9 years old. Even Apple’s hardware improves over that length of time. 😉 I’m rocking a 2020 i9 iMac and am trying to decide if buying a 16″ Max is worth it.

Matthew, congrats on the continued growth. I’ve told you before how much I love your channel and your tips, but one I haven’t seen and I can’t seem to find a short cut for is when working in the timeline, say I want to go next clip or back a clip but have that actually select it (e.g. if you are re framing for a letterbox effect) not just have the cursor move with the up and down arrows. I am so sick of having to click on the clip, I wish the up and down arrows would just select the next clip for me. Have I missed something??

Hi Matthew. Thanks for the video. Can I just check? Did you say you got the base, 8 core model with the 1TB drive and 16GB of RAM? Does it get crazy hot with the fans going full tilt when you’re video editing? I see a lot of videos where they’re stress testing the things, but am really interested in your real world pro experience.

I’m so glad you mentioned using the internal HD. I have been doing just that for the last month and a half on my base M1 Macbook Pro (2020). Why get the M1 if you’re still a slave to the external SSD. Because of that and proper file management, I feel like I don’t even need to upgrade to the M1 Pro or Max(for now). Thanks for all your channel has helped me out!

2015 MBP15 32GB w/Radeon gpu…it worked but render times in 4k and 3D were a drag.
Super happy with MBP16 Max/64GB Life is so much better for what I do. SO MUCH BETTER.

The sound…yes. In the right seat, it generates spatial audio…witchcraft!
16 inches is still too small for my serious work but I sidecar and my external monitors have taken care of all my needs.

FCP is crazy fast. I have to use premiere and after effects for teaching and even those are way faster than they were on any machine I’ve used.

External drives are a daily requirement for me so unfortunately I am stuck with that(worse that I have to use expat to go between windows and macs…stupid schools)
