I suppose the base model M1 Max Studio doesn’t come with 2 additional thunderbolt ports, the two of them in the front were actually USB3 ports…

@past greg, you forgot to mention that the base Mac Studio has 32gb vs the 24gb of the top end Mac mini m2. I’ll take that 32gb any day.

M2 Mac mini seems like good value, but paying more than double for a 50% faster chip isn‘t really justified as the production cost is only slightly higher. Also, in PC-world there is better value out there – the new Intel chips especially beat them easily in multicore. So, for video editors, I‘m not sure wether a mac mini for 1500€ is really worth it, unless you are using final cut

I am from old Intel Macbook pro 16 inch. Thanks Greg this video helped me in deciding to purchase 🙏
I ordered today regular “M2 mac mini” – for long term investment with specs – 24GB Unified Memory + 512 GB SSD storage + 10GB ethernet . Went for the higher one as we might need these specs in future , never knows 😊.
I feel the M2 Mini specs is already overkilled for me with the specs i selected , hence didnt go for the M2 pro mini 😊

Your assumption that there will be an M2 Mac Studio in the near future is a pretty wild one. There has been no evidence of that, and in fact they may even wait until M3 for that machine. We’ve known about plans for the M2 Mac Mini for a year now.

Seems weird that the mac mini with the highest spec is not as powerful as the 16″ m2 macbook pro with its m2 Max chip. So right now there is no desktop mac as powerful as the high-end laptop. Of course the downside of the MBP is price and the fact that there are only 3 ports. Even the 2019 16″ MBP had 4 ports. I guess that Apple think that the addition of an HDMI port and a magsafe power port make up for the loss of a thunderbolt port. I think I’ll be waiting for the M2 Max mac studio upgrade.

Hear me out, if the Mac minis were able to be charged through USB C, if you had an iPad you could use the sidecar feature to use your iPad display, and plug the Mac mini into the iPad USB c port to charge it, and boom a monitor for ur m1 mac mini, and the iPad could be used as a monitor and charger/battery

What’s insane is a $400 price increase for 16GB & 512GB – which are minimum useable. They should have a base model @ $799 with 16GB & 512GB. I have a Mac Studio but would buy a Mini as a spare at that price. 8GB RAM with 256GB storage is obsolete in 2023.

Getting the extra cores is probably a waste, because these types of products tend to be thermally limited. The regular mac mini has a tiny fan, and can’t remove that much heat. The Mac Studio has much better cooling.

The price put apple in competition with AMD and Intel in all market except low-end.

Even 2nd hand Mac Mini 2020 in my place still offered at 800 USD..

I wouldn’t expect Studio upgrade for at least a year, mostly because upcoming Mac Pro will probably not have M2 Extreme (rumored cancelled), so there has to be bigger jump to M2 Ultra in Mac Pro (which could still be a substantial update from M1 Ultra with the best cooling, best SOCs and expandability, but I wouldn’t just offer it in lower class Studio anytime soon).
