YES, exactly what I thought after researching what MacBook I would buy (I am a programmer but not somebody that needs a lot of performance since my Programms aren’t that expensive when it comes to that).
I first thought the MacBook Air M2 would be amazing for me when I watched the Keynote but afterwards thought about it differently when I saw how the specs and price matched. I live in Germany, so these are the German Prices in Euro.
My personal mins were at least 512GB (probably even 1TB) of Storage and 16GB of RAM.
So, if you take the MacBook Air and put 8GB -> 16GB of RAM and 256GB -> 512GB of Storage into it and then compare it to the entry-level Pro 14″ (which is already equipped with 16GB RAM and 512GB Storage, as in my opinion every entry-level option of a modern Laptop should be in 2022) you have 1959€ vs. 2249€ which is actually still a 290€ difference which is a lot more than said in this video but still in my opinion worth it for the screen of the 14″ alone (especially when paired with the Vivid-App).
Now, because I am a Student right now I can use the Student-Discount as well which makes the same M2 Air a 1821€ Device and the Pro 14″ a 2024€ Device making the difference even less with 203€.
What I don’t understand about all of that is that Apple could have made one simple tweak to their lineup and removed most of the criticism by simply not starting with 256GB of Storage but 512GB of Storage for the baseline M2 Air. It wouldn’t have been that much more expensive for them, would have removed the problems of only using 256GB Modules because they would then always have used 2 Modules for every configuration and at the same time because of the way to expensive upgrade-cost for Storage from Apple the Gap between Pro 14″ and M2 Air would have been much bigger if they at least started at the same Storage for the Base-Model.
I bought an M1 MBA last year. Absolutely loved it, changed my expectations from a laptop. My girlfriend tried it and was amazed, so around April we decided to wait for the M2 MBA. As soon as it launched I realized all the things you say in this video, and got ourselves a new 14” MBP M1 Pro base model, for cheaper. We now own the 2 best laptops Apple has put out in a long long time.
I really enjoyed the ad segment, that was beautiful. Really makes me interested in these shirts 🙂
Go Spain!
Your point about the system memory requirements of current Mac OS is a good one. 16GB of unified memory really is the bare minimum you need. I upgraded from a 16” intel powered MacBook Pro to a 14” M1 pro MacBook Pro with the base 16GB ram configuration. I have been regretting not getting the 32GB version since. If you are upgrading from a computer with a discrete GPU and plan to use at least one external display, get at least 32GB of memory. My system allocates 1.5GB of ram just to drive the 5K display. By the time I open a virtual desktop to access work systems and have a few other apps running, I’m out of memory.

Love how Saul Goodman agreed to do the sponsored segment
Apart from the review, my eyes got stuck on the background video at 1:55… Is that Taksim, Istanbul??? 🙂
Great video 👍🏻
Thanks, I’m good with my m1 air
Apple are taking the piss now tbh, they lost the Intel tax and this is how they repay the people who made their eco-system what it is. I wouldn’t buy one on value alone, they’ll soon make nothing I’d buy new because of corporate greed. A completely different company from the beginnings, Shame on Apple tbh…
Well done on the review, I do have to disagree with your final conclusion. By the same argument no one should buy an iMac. It should be mac mini or mac studio only. When a new laptop body arrives it’s like a new car body. it may have identical performance to the model year prior but you might favor that style more and spend 10K more on the car. Laptops, like phones cars and cloths are very much part of our identities. They are tools we spend hours of our lives with (often 8-16 hours a day). if you swap your laptop every 2-3 years yes you should be more focused on not burning cash but if you hold onto the device for more like 5-7 (or 12 as one individual in the comment section mentioned) then we are talking about a couple of bucks a month over the life span of the machine to have what will make you more happy. By the same argument you should have a casio watch from target on your wrist but instead you have one you like and find attractive or has sentimental value to you.
omg no 54 for a boring plain shirt
God, what an ugly 2017-looking laptop…lol
m2 air absolutely priced so bad. great vid.
Having watched tonnes of videos on MacBook Air M2, i can safely say that this is the most well made video which tells you exactly what you need to know when you are in the market for a MacBook to take a definite decision. Well done Guys ! You have a new subscriber 👍👍
always love your videos – good job.
Mr. Snazzy, best review of this machine up to date. I was waiting for this review before buying. And, i am happy to say that I will wait again before upgrading my old 2016 MBP.
Your conclusion is my exact take and you did a fantastic job breaking it down. The M1 Air was incredibly impressive as it had everything going for it (price, performance, battery life, etc.) Mainly, PRICE for what you got. The M2 Air is an incredible machine but is simply TOO EXPENSIVE for what you get. As going back to the previous example trying to beat the M1 Air (especially on sale for $850) is nearly impossible. As the competition there is way behind (not as good of trackpad, screen, keyboard, sound, weight, battery life, power, etc.). Whereas, once you get into the recommended settings for the M2 Air you are into “premium laptop” category (heck even at stock you are almost double what the average layman wants to spend) and the competition gets a lot more fierce (as you are going against nearly every windows machine). Granted the M2 Air probably outperforms most of the competition there but at that point upgrading to an even better machine (M1 Pro) is the better choice and theoretically spending that extra amount at that point isn’t as big of a deal. Which is why I think Apple really missed the mark on this one. To me the MacBook Air should be the “affordable” option of Macs. The M2 Air is NOT that. Even at the base price point of $1200 (especially for 256 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM) which are horrifically out of date for modern computing (when you think long term). Leaving it as an awesome feat of modern computing but hardly one that most individuals should choose if they value their money and can only make a single choice.
te quiero mucho quinn
