I thought you were way to hard on this laptop. Everyone wants to compare the new M2 MacBook Air to its more powerful siblings. If I wanted a more powerful Mac, I would buy the 14″ Pro, but I don’t. I turned on low power mode to extend the battery life and noticed no difference in performance. Twenty percent increase in weight on a laptop is substantial and the way this computer manages memory, eight gigabytes is plenty. I did opt for the 500gb ssd but probably will never notice the difference. This is a beautiful, light duty laptop and for that it is perfect. I love Snazzy Labs and never miss your videos, I just disagree with this one. Obviously, I am in the minority.
Totally agree with Quinn. Get the M1 Air or get a 14″ MBP on sale.
I don’t know who gave Quinn a green screen but that was the best sponsor spot I’ve seen in a while
Is it worth upgrading from on M1 air to M2? Looks really marginal to me. It’s looks pretty nice though.
Thanks again Quinn for your accurate perspective. As a fellow gearhead I love watching review vids from my favourite creators when new hardware is released. fUn! But not so much any more. It’s become frankly exhausting listening to irrelevant points leading to unfounded, or even silly conclusions. You know that tension you get in your stomach when your watching something that just doesn’t represent reality? Uhg. Your snazzy style has been unchanged for years and still remains rather refreshing. All of these creators tend to copy many aspects of each other’s conversational style as they write their scripts and build their channels. They’re copying the wrong guy. Cheers 🙂
What a killer-good video, as always.
you are always so objetive, keep it up!
Funny – I saw the title of your video a couple weeks ago: “The M2 MacBook Air is Compromised” – and completely ignored it for the same reason you stated at the opening of your video.
Great review. Clear explanations. The nitpicking was, well, nitpicky.
I have a MBP 14″ which I quite like apart from the thickness and weight. This Air would’ve been perfect if they’d only put one of the Thunderbolt ports on the other side. The wrap around cable to the left side is enough of an inconvenience that along with the poorer screen, just didn’t justify the extra purchase. I wonder if other people have similarly specific grievances. Great take as always. Keep it up!
I understand WHY people compare the values of the MacBooks… But I am not sure if I 100% agree on comparing it with DISCOUNTED prices… I mean, the M2 MacBook Air would have more competitive prices in about 4~5 months, just like the M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro….
So, Air doesn’t have a good value but a $50 t-shirt does?
I think many YT creators are misleading viewers. The M2 Air is better in every metric, apart from the 256GB SSD, than the M1 Air. There are many videos that show this and this is fact. Even Max Tech did an updated review showing that now developers have updated their apps (DaVinci) exporting can be twice as fast as the M1.
So do not fall for the M1 is as good, as this is fake. Most of the work we do uses a single core and we know the M2 is 10% faster than the M1 so no leap of faith to understand the M2 is clearly better. The RAM on the M2 is 60% faster than the M1. You will notice that in the browser benchmarks and how snappy opening apps is. This is undeniable and saving $200 seems a bad deal for a techie like me, even if you do not push the machine, as that snappiness is quite real. With 40% more bandwidth and similar more ML performance, once more apps are updated for the M2, it will perform far better than the M1 still.
Buy the M1 if you cannot afford the M2, but do not buy it thinking it is just as good, as it is def not, and in fact the M2 Air beats the M1 Pro 14 in many single-core activities as it is 10% faster! The choice of M2 Air or M1 Pro 14 is obviously a personal preference and depends on what you need. There is no right or wrong if you are upgrading the M2 Air to 512GB/16GB as to which you prefer. But as 80-90% of users will buy the base M2 Air, that is really not relevant to the vast majority.
I knew for a fact that apple selling it with 8 gigs would make it a bad deal, and the fact that apple also didn’t remove the M1 MBA/ reduce the price by ~$100 sent it home. Like many others said, If this machine was priced near the $1000 price-point, like the M1 MBA is, then it would’ve been a very good deal, however, I’m not surprised at apple not doing this, because unfortunately, we are having many problems like: inflation, increasing costs for transportation, longer delivery times, pandemic lockdowns, chip shortage, unpredictable consumer behaviour etc. I’d expect the price of other products launching soon to also increase. (even commodity products’ prices are increasing, so expect a tough ride)
Really good and neutral video. Thank you.
So apple fucked their low end with upgrade prices.
GENIUS
13:40 greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
The m2 macbook air costs 1519 euros in the Netherlands, so its 1558,52 dollars so ill stick to my m1 16gb 😀
Great review…So you’re not recommending it? Confused.
