I think claiming being 20% heavier “nothing” is a bit of a stretch…
It’s enough of a weight difference that you (out at least your shoulders in long term) definitely will notice.
I’ve seen a lot of people around me deciding to buy the Air instead of 14-inch Pro because of the weight and thickness difference, knowing full well that there’s a (relative) compromise in performance.

I live in Singapore where the 14” M1 Pro is still significantly more expensive than the air. Picked up a 16GB M2 Air in the end because I wasn’t paying $500 more. And most retailers sell macs close to SRP cries

I think all of the points made are valid (if a bit nit picky at times ;-)), but that being said I sprung for a kitted out M2 air (24GB ram, 1TB, higher end cpu) and am not the least bit disappointed with my decision. For me, the size/weight difference between the M2 air and the m1 pro was the deciding factor. I hate heavy backpacks. I do algorithm development for medical image reconstruction and I haven’t run into anything yet that the m2 air couldn’t handle (other than CUDA code for nvidia gpus).

Great video and calls out some things I noticed with the keyboard and the trackpad. The only thing I couldn’t agree with was the impact of the weight (and size). 20% may not seem like much but holding the two devices, the 14″ feels incredibly chunky and weighty. Selling my 16″ M1 Max for the new M2 MacBook Air and tried the 14″ to see if it was suitable. MBA for the couch, throwing into a bag for the weekend and taking with me while travelling, Mac Studio for the rest of the time. Both for professional work exclusively.

The M2 MBA suits my needs more than the M1 MBA because of the additional RAM available (used for VM’s). The M2 fits a niche where people want more RAM and keeping weight down is crucial – and those who plain just want the “latest and greatest” compared to the M1 MBA which feels dated.

You only cover a third of the story with thermal throttling. In addition to CPU thermal throttling under load you also need to test iGPU and CPU+iGPU thermal throttling.
