Apple apologists say that the M2 Air is designed for casual use but the M1 Air can do the same exact thing for much less. I hazard to guess the main reason most buy the M2 is mostly for its new beautiful design because the improvements like the web camera and screen are hardly noticeable compared to the older M1 in actual use. At least for me, I borrowed my friend’s M2 Air and compared it to my M1, performance felt the same. If I wanna step up from my M1 Air, I will most likely get an 14 inch Pro instead.

Be aware that base model m1 airs will probably revert to a 1 nand ssd at some point. It would be interesting if someone tested this

I kinda felt bad at first since I had to buy a Mac for the ‘go’ early this year and of course got the m1 air. But after seeing this and other reviews I gotta admit I’m happy with my m1 and don’t think m2 would’ve fit my needs better.

I bought my silver MacBook Air M1 8GB/256GB on Monday 8/8. Beautiful machine and I love it. I saw both M1/M2 models at the Apple store and wasn’t a huge fan of the M2 slab style nor the notch. Got the education discount for $899 as well as a bonus $150 Apple Gift Card. The back to school promotion is fantastic if you have student credentials!

Here in Canada (chinada)
The base M2 air is 1499 and at that price apple should had considered selling their laptop starting with a dual 256 gb ssd
Total 512GB ssd this would be a good deal for the asking price.
In order to get the New M2 air
With 16gb ram and a 512gb ssd i need to dish out 2k instead of getting a base 14 inch macbook m1 pro refurbished for 2250 $
Basically 250$ more Than that moded M2 air with way more perks.
Apple and their scheemy fingers.

Waited for a year for the M2 to release and bought the M1 512Gb just when it did release. The price difference between the two outside of the US is huge and the M1 Air is clearly Value for money unlike the M2

I have the MacBook M1 512gb and it works great. Love it. Battery can last all day! Don’t waste your money on the M2.

I miss the wedge. I have a 15″ MBP now, and I hate the sharp edge on the front. Really wish they had kept the wedge design for the air. I may switch to an M1 Air before they go away.

Totally agree. I’m returning my m2 air and keeping my m1 air. The old one feels way better in my lap, and the price of new one is totally unjustified.

I personally ABHOR the tapered aesthetic lol.
It makes logistical sense that you type easier on it and can carry it easier, but, to me, the taper has always looked cheap.

Though you may not need the bigger screen, the better camera, the MagSafe, etc., others do. And I think that price hike is nominal giving all the bells and whistles that were upgraded. And I don’t think Apple was intentionally being conniving with these additions… I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard complain about their lightning cable slot being taken by the charger haha. I mean hundreds and hundreds of people… I personally couldn’t have cared less, but the point is there was definitely a mob for it, so I can see why they did it.

I think it’s fair to say the base M2 would be faster than the base M1 if it had two SSDs.
But I don’t think the everyday user would even notice that difference.. I’m not sure why they chose to do the single SSD, but I think given everything else, the slight price increase was warranted. Just my opinion 🙂

Ppl have to realize that the common user doesn’t notice a difference between 50 seconds and 25 seconds. Neither of those speeds are an outrageous wait time. What the common user DOES want is a computer that works, that has a nice screen for watching Netflix, that has a nice camera for FaceTiming Mom, etc.

Just bc something is slightly less fast doesn’t mean it has less value.

The M1 AIR has a superior design (since 2008) to the M2. This “new” design language is a step backwards and pure marketing hype. Typing this on my M1… and its lovely and comfy tapered edges. And upward firing speakers.. and… its black on grey keyboard… and its always cool temperature… and, and, and… Long live the Air.

Agree. Not only did I not “upgrade” from my M1 MBA, I bought another M1for my daughter instead of an M2. Maybe there’ll be an M3 12” model (3nm chip design) in the near future? I could go for that if it’s as powerful or more so 😉
