Can you do an m2 mba with 512gb vs m2 mbp with 512gb please, as I would like to see how video editing holds up in iMovie in the m2 mba? Many thanks!
I totally agree with you on this one. There would not have been so much hoohah if Apple had kept the same $999 price for the M2 Air. Whenever I buy something new it shouild be better in all aspects than the model it replaces. There is a very important principle here…it does not matter than many regular users will not be affected by the differences. Its like buying a Ferarri but giving you a Toyota engine inside; when driving in the city where there is traffic lights, traffic and lots of speed limits, most people won’t find the difference in a Fararri. But if you need to take it for a spin in the backroads…you will definitely feel something going wrong. Laptops are a medium to longish term investment….so what people do with it changes over time. I may be websurfing and reading emails and watching videos now, does not mean that I will not be doing more intensive work 6 months down the line.
So lets see M2 Air v M1 Air
1. Performance Gains: very marginal (only maybe a bit more substantial with the media encoders) & 1 additional GPU core
2. Battery Life Gains: None
3. Display Gains: Marginally better LCD display (0.3″ gain in size and 10-bit colors instead of 8-bit color)
4. Hard Disk performance: Up to 50% worse than the previous base model M1 Air because of single NAND chip (the top selling SKU).
5. Web Cam: 1080p vs 720p (but in terms of performance, the gains were marginal at best)
6. Chasis/Looks: New look is definitely mode modern and I find it so so much nicer that the done to death wedge shaped design.
7. Keyboard: Similar (Apple still makes some of the best keyboards and trackpads regardless of model with the exception of the butterfly keyboards)
8. I/O: Same: Both USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3 Only. Gained a Magsfe port (which means it frees up a USB-C port)
9. External Display Support: Same. Both only supports 1 external display at up to 6K 60Hz (This sucks, I would have happily paid the $200 just to have 2 external displays
10. Charging brick: Same 30W (Option to buy for additional money)
11. Weight: Lighter by 0.1lbs (2.7lbs vs 2.8lbs)
So lets summarize:
With not much gains across the board to marginal at best that means it all boils down to ONE key difference:
1. The killer looks of the new re-design
Is it enough to pay the extra $200 just based on design alone?
Oh for god’s sake. All this complaining about the M2 Air almost makes me wish I was in the market for one.
yes i guess they should have waited for 3 nm architecture instead… or this is an already 3nm design of the wafer and it only lacks the tech.. they are ahead .. but competition is catching up so they might go for it.. as they are new to this chip making business for computers… even iphones sometimes i feel them as slower than androids .. my fahter has a cheap phone and is snappier than a pro iphone.. so i guess apple has to be more attentive.. this m2 air is a failure in terms of performances.. with the money fo the upgrade you buy the 14 inch.. that is the way to go .. or i mayself i have a 16 inches.. fantastic computer..
Good point. The M1 already has i9 levels of performance. With 16GB, it’s basically a pro level machine. Even at 8GB, it has good enough performance for most uses.
Dunno man, I got the midnight M2 Air with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD, I have 0 complaints. But I have come from a 2012 MacBook Pro…
Does anybody know if Apple has changed the M1 MacBook Air to a singular 256 GB NAND chip as well?- similar to what they have done with the M2 MacBook Air
Good review. Apple raised the bar with the M1 Air, imo. I’ve had the 256/16g ram configuration since last year, and it hasn’t missed a beat. It’s the best laptop I’ve ever had…super fast, snappy. It copes with short video editing tasks. The M2 looks cool, but by the time you spec it up (512/16 g ram) you’re only £150 away from a powerhouse 14 inch Pro!
M2 Air is overpriced.
Apple is also backfired with such slow SSD trick on base model that force ppl to buy 512G version.
Yep if you are happy with the M1 Air there is no point of getting the M2 especially the base model. In my case….I bought the base model M2 Air for the reasons that this is my first Mac ever, my use case mostly around content consumption and office work, and also I prefer the new design over the M1 so the SSD speed downgrade despite a ******* **** on apple side, it didn’t affect my experience…especially since I come from a cheap windows laptop 😆.
Guys, chill out!
M1 / M2 drastically outperform intel MBP of previous gen.
New air is fare ahead in design and aesthetics and this pretty much justifies the price. If you you really need you can bump the ssd to 512 and have a machine that’s on par with newest 14/16 m1pros.
So we’re good!
Best bang for the buck is as always the legacy version of air (which is sweet)
I got myself a Macbook M1 Air Base model second hand but basically new ish for £660$.
Best purchase of an Apple Product I’ve made recently.
What’s up with everyone editing videos these days…
Thank you for this broadbandwidth and keen data dump. Lol you’re refreshing and very insightful That color rocks but the pitting around the thunderbolt ports will be distracting. Today is epic and your delivery smooth Thank you. I’m a new follower and love love love your show keep on rockin in the free world. Cheers Ricky 💃🕺🏼🎶🐈⬛🎸💥🥷🇺🇸
Thanks – as always an interesting and thoughtful video! I had a base M1 Air and couldn’t wait to upgrade to an M2. I needed a larger ssd and more ram, but the better screen and extra port were a real draw too. I found having to juggle the port limitations of the M1 Air cumbersome and frustrating. I’m very pleased with the new M2. However, I do prefer the tapered design and the rose gold colour of my M1 over my M2 starlight. (It’s a meh colour).
I think your title should read “The $1200 M2 MacBook Air is disappointing TO ME”. I love my M2 Air base model and much prefer it over my M1 Air base model. I love the new design…I think it looks better and it definitely makes the Air much more balanced now. All the other things…MagSafe, the bigger, brighter screen, the bigger trackpad and function keys, and more. And I could swear the keyboard typing experience is ever slightly a little better. I’ve never noticed a performance hit vs my M1 Air, in fact things I use seem slightly snappier. Then again, I don’t export 4K video files and I don’t think 99% of the people who are going to buy this laptop will. I don’t love the price hike and sure, why did Apple not use two 128GB drives but I honestly wouldn’t know unless somebody pointed it out. Overall I feel like it’s a W for most people.
Not really a comment about the MacBook Air here… more of an aside:
I really enjoyed your presentation style – you remind me a little of Rod Serling (Twilight Zone host), when it comes to verbal delivery. Excellent job!
I just bought an $700 mint condition m1 air second hand (with another year of warranty still active)… Still thinking if i should have bought the m2.. But then again I think of the money I saved and I get over it :))
M1
It might just be me but I find your HDR videos quite annoying especially on new Macs that support HDR. Way too bright & the colours look waaaay too over exposed.
