The keyboard on my 2019 MBP makes me sad. Before that I was using an early 2011 MBP and that saw me through undergrad and was amazing and the best computer I ever had. And then it died 😭 leaving me with the revolting and trash butterfly switch keyboard as my only option. I bought a mechanical keyboard and use that instead. Does it look ridiculous? Yes. Does my 2019 MBP’s keyboard function? Yes. But I hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. I’m glad Jony Ives is gone and Apple won’t be sacrificing function to cater to a moronic design language anymore. Here’s hoping at least 🤷🏻‍♂️

I do own Apple devices, but their Mac and MacBooks are the one I avoid by a lot. Now call me any names but I prefer powerful gaming computers or even an ultra book that can cool down properly.

While the M2 MacBook Air seems awesome, but thermal throttling is much more problematic since I do full load on editing videos and recording gameplay. I love the looks of it, although thermal throttling never on the table.

I went with used Macbook Pro 14 M1 16/512 for $1220. I had the base model M1 Air for a bit. But the 256GB SSD is a complete joke. 8GB RAM was fine but then some programming stuff requires 16GB RAM minimum. Returned it and got the MBP 14 base model through Mac Edu for $1820. That shit is heavy, but u quickly forget it. If u have the money, this is your perfect machine. But I couldn’t justify the extra $820 difference. Returned it and looked at used market for M1 Air instead. Found a $1000 M1 Air 16/1TB or M1 Pro 14 $1220. Solely for the display upgrade, and overall performance bumps. I couldn’t resist the 14 LOL!

i could buy a m1 air with 16gb and 512gb for £1258 with a m1 ipad air for £426 equaling for £1684 or a m2 air with 16gb and 512gb for £1529…..
i waited some time for the m2 air to get it for uni but price wise, its not that worth it for me due to the price bump.

apple is stupid for soldering everything together especially the storage, the idea that if an ssd fails and nand wears away data recovery will be near impossible and replacement will be a whole new machine.

I’ve spent the last week in torment between which MBA to purchase and this video has sealed the deal for me. The design upgrades, with the larger, sleeker screen, squared form factor and bougie colours (which I admit are sick) seem now- to me- solely factors to impress mates, attract vigilant thieves and conform to consumerism.

I don’t need it for intense extended 1080p video calling so the new camera isn’t a must and the mic on the M1 is good enough for voice notes and ditties. Ports can be extended with a third party device for about £25; I love MagSafe on my early 2015 Pro but I think I’ll survive without it.

And after sifting through chart after chart of geekbench scores and render times, seeing how even the base M1 keeps up, sometimes OUTDOING the M2 with heavy loads considering the single unit SSD malarky, it’s hard to see the value in the £300 price increase unless you’ve got pinhole pupils that need 100 more nits in your screen. And when there’s a proper heat sync pad in the M1 that can keep it ticking over more efficiently, a big factor when it comes to future-proofing, despite it being two years old.

I’m a creatively inclined student– using Premiere Pro for short format visuals and StudioOne for dabbling in music and from what you’ve said as well as from what I’ve absorbed from YT about processing power, the M1 will be just fine when it’s time to up the workload for short periods of time; I can wait a few more minutes for a render if it’ll save me £300. Coming from a Mac approaching 8 years of age running an archaic OS, I’m sure the jump in performance for me will be insane regardless.

Going to uni this week is putting my spending into perspective. £300 to me, in full time education, is a phat old sum that will be really appreciated elsewhere- it literally could even keep me alive depending on how well I end up budgeting. Thank you Mac Address for hitting the nail on the head in the perfect comparison format- easy to digest and evaluative, for sure one of the best videos I’ve seen covering the MBA gap… and at this point I must’ve seen em all.

For me its the M1– but if the M2 is your cuppa, own it man, I’ll be envious of the Starlight shining out of your bag. Thanks again and cheers for reading lol.

I feel that it makes more sense to upgrade the ram instead of the ssd. You can just buy an external ssd if you need more storage, but i feel that 256g is enough for a student unless you do a lot of video editing or any other heavy computer work. You cant do anything about the ram once you have bought the mac, however the storage can still be improved through external storages.
