As a poli-sci major, I approve this review
i took M1 MBA to 101 temp to install a windows using UTM VM
I don’t get it. I would not buy an almost 10 years chassis right now. Sure Mac are expensive, but come on, these are fancy designed objects and that’s why people are buying Mac in the first place.
do students really need something like that? running powerpoint on 120fps or what????
I often find myself pushing my base M1 Air. I usually have a few dozen tabs open, and will often have word, several pdfs open and will run qgis.
Good god man you don’t half waffle on… and on…. and on…👎
Compiling code, computer science stuff
I watch these videos all the time as someone who hates Mac but someone who wants to keep up with the world of tech. And I feel the reviews are fair and reasonable here. At first I was so against this channel, thinking it might end up as a fanboy channel, but it’s been a very reasonable place to get fair takes on Mac products. I love it
Mmmmmmno
Bought a used 2014, 11’ MacBook Air for $140 and DAMN it’s amazing for the price!
im sorry but jonathan does not belong at lmg. bad energy i feel from him.
Perfect timing — I just got a job at a university that will involve occasional video editing. And I usually work in Premiere 😅 It will be an interesting conversation with them about my hardware setup but ti’s good to have this perspective.
…I did.
I have my 2019 macbook Pro.
Yes it gets hot and is pretty much horrible for gaming, but it gets the job done at the end of the day.
But I will change it when I get my 1st job. I want a better macbook.
.
.
.
I also want a PC.
So, either I get a new MacBook or a really competent laptop so that I can use it for casual use and for gaming.
I believe that if you want an upgraded M2 air, you’d be better off with a M2 Pro.
🤔
Where to get the refurbished one?
Compiling my university project on my M1 Pro takes 10 minutes. On a 48-Core Intel Xeon Server from 2014 it takes 20 minutes.
I sure love my MacBook. The price bump for the M1 Pro is worth it (for me at least).
Hmm…I think it wouldn’t be work at all.
I’d just be running modded-
…nah even just Vanilla Minecraft at max settings and it would most likely be bad for the laptop in the long term.
Then, if modded, it’d get even worse because even after installing performance mods, there is also shaders, so it would bring it to its knees and it would throttle performance. If it was a Pro, then the fans would be going in full speed or something and even then I’d be most likely getting around 30fps.
Comparatively (so that you, the reader, knows how much of a difference this would be compared to my current laptop), my 2019 MacBook Pro with a 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 would run at around 1 or maybe even 3fps with the same modded MC settings. In Vanilla, it would be at around 15fps with max settings I believe.
But the M2 Macs performance running MC is complete speculation on my part since I haven’t done any tests myself. 😔
For me to do so, I’d need:
1. Minecraft
2. Create “mods” and “shaderpacks” folders
3. Download OptiFine
4. Download ComplementaryShaders v4.
5. Run MC.
6. Install OptiFine.
7. Test laptop with only OptiFine.
8. Download Iris/Sodium installer.
9. Install Fabric Iris/Sodium.
10. Test laptop with only Iris/Sodium.
11. Download the mods I use to enhance performance and also some that improves the vanilla experience (I don’t exactly play ‘modded’ MC. I moreso enjoy an enhanced Vanilla experience. I also try to make Complementary as close to Minecraft Bedrock RTX as possible.).
12. Download OptiFabric.
13. Create 2 folders:
– for a modded OptiFabric+OptiFine test
– for a modded Iris+Sodium test
14. Go through the process of checking if all mods are compatible in the OptiFabric+OptiFine folder while removing the ones that are there to implement OptiFine features while using Sodium.
15. Test laptop with modded Minecraft using OptiFabric+Optifine.
16. Test laptop with modded Minecraft using Fabric (Iris+Sodium).
Ehm … thick besels… i had a macbook air in 2014… those were thick besels
My biggest question is as a writer which should I buy for maximum longevity. I want a system I can write and keep all of my novels on for as long as possible before upgrading again. I even have though about getting an iPad Air and keyboard to go with it as an option.
I really appreciated the final takeaway about how if money wasn’t an issue then the M2 MBA was ultimately the better overall device, but in terms of getting your money’s worth, a refurbished M1 MBA still takes the cake.
Great in-depth review! I’ve been in the market since I gave my laptop away last year. I’ve been windows since 2004 (my last Mac was an original iMac). This might bring me back in. I’m already in the Apple ecosystem— I have an iPhone, Apple Watch, and the AirPods Pro.
