I moved from a 2016 15″ Pro to a base model M1 air (with drive upgrade) a year ago – the difference is night and day, it’s such a great little machine. Despite doing pretty heavy rendering and compliation it’s been an absolute beast of a machine.

I guess I’m just a weirdo then, I bought a 2019 Macbook Air and loved it. Now that it is starting to blast fans and load Affinity Publisher slower, I am not hesitating about the M2 Air. I’m not thrilled by the price or storage amount, but it’s an Apple tax I’ve come to expect.

Should’ve bought an M1 Macbook Air back in November 2020. If I look at it as an asset, it was a great deal back in 2020. I’m not saying it still isn’t a great deal in 2022. Problem is that the M1 Macbook Air is still priced at $999 after almost 2 years in the market. The window of opportunity to fully maximize the value of my sweet large purchase, in my opinion, is closed. Awkward time to buy a Macbook Air right now for me.
Because I expected that the M1 Macbook Air would go down in price to $799. And the M2 Macbook Air would start at $999. That didn’t happen. So those who bought the M1 Air from day one not only got an ultra fast and ultra efficient notebook computer, their M1 256GB SSD is faster than the M2’s SSD.
And if they were to sell it in the secondary market, people will pay $900 for it. Little loss in value. (cash)
I would buy the M1 Macbook Air in 2022. I’d be super happy with it. But what if next year they fix the issues of the M2 Macbook Air?
Though I could buy used for $850, but sales tax would push the price closer to $900. If I’m already there at the $900 range, might as well buy brand new for $999 + tax. It is such a conundrum.

M2 Air has no place in the market. only people who are getting their first mac and don’t know any better and don’t research it will be buying it. The suckers that do will be stuck with an overpriced machine with limited resell value. (M1 Air or the M1 Pro are better choices at every price point)

I hope apple learns a lesson. You can’t release a new version of a line of laptops that is actually worse that its predecessor in multiple ways AND more expensive. That’s an absolute garbage way of maintaining your laptop line.

If they lowered the price to the M1 Air price point it would be a “better” buy but even then it’s a no from me until they fix the 256GB SSD problem. But then again then they would have to drop the price on the M1 Air to compete and again…. price wise the M1 Air is still a better buy. They haven’t done enough to make the M2 worth it. The design of the chasis is amazing and I agree it makes it super tempting. But that’s not enough for me. On principle alone, dont release a worse laptop for more money. hard to overcome that, or it will become industry norm.

8:20 what why? Who in their right mind would come to that conclusion? 8Gb of RAM will be a way more limiting factor than a half speed, half life cycle 256Gb SSD. External storage exists, external RAM doesn’t.

I can’t justify spending 1000$ for a laptop with less than 1tb of storage, I’d rather get a windows laptop with a rtx 3050 and 512-1tb for less than 1000$

Air is no longer a value machine that it was on release of M1 and in 2014-16 times.
Similarly priced Ryzen 6000u and 12th gen intel has basically caught up with fanless M2 performance at sustained load.
Never have I ever performed a task for just few minutes. I don’t know why would people even talk performance score in short brust
