I wouldn’t have the issue of throttling because I will apply the thermal mod to a future Macbook Air M2 I plan to buy because it’s lightweight, and use my desktop PC for heavy rendering and exports when I need to, it’ll work out fine as I’ll use Davinci Resolve soon. Here’s what I want; the lightest laptop that’s still fast enough for video editing on the go and cheaper compared to my existing MBP 2017 15in which is on the way out. I’d go for the midnight blue colour as I think it looks cool. 🙂
no thanks, we are more interested in the asus zenbook flip UP6502
The midnight blue colour is what they objected to? Seriously? The features a product has is what matters to most people. But ok, the colour of it is what matters to an apple person.
And the word used to describe the previous resolution of the webcam is just childish to me. But neither should the adult version of the word be used. Maybe just call the webcam 720p resolution garbage instead.
And this may seem obvious to some, but the only reason the m1/m2 is faster is due to hardware acceleration. So some tasks are done faster on the m1/m2. Unlike the intel mac’s where it has to be done entirely in software. I’d like a comparison where you compare an intel mac and an m1/m2 doing a task that is purely done in software, not hardware, such as code compiling. You’ll find it’s not much faster at all.
Just a reminder, people. I know expensive laptops are all the talk these days, but you can get work done on cheaper 500-700 dollar laptops as well. The MacBook is great but comes with far more compromises. Not to mention, the repairability aspect is becoming worse with every release.
what macbook should you get as a student? a pc save money do more and odds are it will get destroyed within a year anyway
I bought an M1 MacBook end late last year for compsci at uni, yeah id love to run more fps in modded Minecraft and yeah sometimes it gets a bit toasty if I’m doing stuff but overall, absolutely great
I cannot believe gaijoobles sponsored this
Thanks I am very happy that there are new videos and because I am a student I love these types of videos os thank you ur one of my fav apple channels out there
Honestly I think the easy answer is still the same: M1 Macbook Air. You won’t notice any limitations for student workloads, and even in semi-professional workloads with the higher ram models. There is nothing that the vast majority of users could want to do the M1 Macbook Air won’t fly with. The M2 just feels like the ‘new shiny’ to me. It was similar when the 14inch macbook pro released. For almost everyone the Air was the better buy, unless you needed the ports, or the screen, or the media encoder. Because the M1 Macbook Air is still absolutely amazing at almost everything you throw at it.
1:45 XD
Could you modify the M2 air with a thermal heat pad to dissipate heat to the bottom cover? It was done with the M1 MBA and resulted in like for like performance with the M1 pro, with no observable thermal throttling issues.
Wait for M2 Pro 🙂
Here’s a tip don’t get a macbook
My daugther bought an M1 for her school this year, with her own money. When I came to the first meeting at the school, the teacher asked if she had purchased a Mac or a Windows based PC. We answered, of course, that she had bought a Mac. And the teacher was sorry to hear that, but they strongly recommended getting a windows based PC, as the infrastructure at the school, and the software licenses was based on people having Windows machiens. The IT-deparment would also struggle some to help out if she had some technical issues.
We asked, why the hell then, do you list it as a viable option to use at the school on your website?!
– Well, we’d have to list both, and could’t state officially that we recommend either, or else we’d have Apple breathing down our necks. -.-
I checked later on, and Google isn’t listed at their website, so it seems like they’re more afraid of Apple then Google? – Or does Apple just have such a bullish reputation compared to Google?
With the colors you might be unto something. I think there might be line of colorful macbooks when prices go back to normal. Probably just called “the macbook”.
The notch is silly. Can’t imagine paying $1200 for a laptop with 8gb of RAM in 2022 lol.
Great video. I’m looking at getting a refurbished M1 Air to do music recording and production. It probably won’t push the machine very hard, but I’d be interested to see how it handles a full day of recording non stop.
I’d think you can also jump to m1 pro MacBook Pro , if you can spare 1700 (it’s often on sale, and has more powerful CPU, Mini-led, bigger screen, 512 gb ssd, 16GB ram) and for ~300, you can get the unbinned version with 10-cores cpu (vs.8) and 16 core gpu (vs. 14) and this will give you the 96W charger.
It’s a $2k laptop, but then again, it will last you for years, and I see people who still carry a MacBook Pro from 2013, again, like Jonathan said, apple website doesn’t show products on sale, you can get it on Amazon or other websites, unless you’re fine with refurbished
Over here in Europe, we’re getting scammed. For example, a base model M1 MacBook Air costs €1219. Which due to inflation is about the same in USD. A base model M2 MacBook Air already costs €1519.
Apple silicon is the gold standard of portable computing at the moment and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Even Anthony runs a Apple laptop. Jonathan’s recommendation is spot on. Bide your time and look for deals. Don’t let Apple gouge you.
