I recently upgraded from a mid-2014 MacBook Pro to a second-hand M1 Air model, and I don’t regret the purchase at all. Once I realised that I didn’t need as powerful of a computer for my uses than I thought (because even a base-spec Air easily beats the old Pro I had), I jumped towards getting it. Managed to find someone selling one for £700 after a year of use – a significant discount and completely worth it for me as the previous owner had also kept it in good condition. So, important note: look around a little to see if there’s anyone selling second-hand stuff for cheap, because you’ll occasionally stumble into something that is _very_ worthwhile for its cost compared to retail.
M2’s much too expensive for me by comparison.
Most heavy workloads are handled on a cloud now so I don’t see the issue with the processor, but the screen is so much nicer on the 14” MBP that it’s tough to pay near that for an air.
I honestly compared the MacBook Pro M1 Pro to the M2 MacBook Air, and the M1 Pro is not much more expensive. But does have a much better base specification, better screen, more ports, M1 Pro is a lot faster. And it was quite easy to get a nice discount on it. So I bought that one instead.
Checked the channel for this video when I was buying one like a month ago lol
Because you mention leaving tabs open, I’d love to see how the M2 Air stacks up against my 6+ year old i7-6700k PC with 32GB of ram and Titan Xp… I keep over 100 tabs open on my 49″ super ultrawide all day.
If Bootcamp worked and the GPU performance was better than my old Titan Xp, I’d probably just get a Mac Studio. I can’t wait for that Windows ARM licensing deal with Qualcomm to expire so we can finally see Windows run natively on the Mac.
In germany, the M1 MacBook Air got more expensive and the M2 MacBook Air costs ~$1.499 and the M2 MacBook Pro freaking ~$1599! When the 14“ can be get for ~$1899 sometimes, which is crazy.
Tools for rich guys(my entire 1 years salary is less then m2 air) 🙃
See, normally when people think of students, they’re typically on a budget. MacBooks are anything but budget.
I am actually surprised since Jonathan didn’t bring up ram on the base model. I feel like it would be a problem for me personally. A big one.
Where I live the M2 costs 1559€ and the M1 MacBook Air is constantly on sale around 1000€.
TBH I’d either get the M1 Air if I couldn’t afford the M1 MacBook Pro, otherwise get the Pro. If you’re exporting 8k then you are probably also applying enough filters and effects to make the M2 throttle and make you wish you had bought the Pro. If you’re not doing that, then the M1 Air is “good enough” at 200+ dollars cheaper.
Im no students, but for daily use and coding. The heat doesnt seems to bother.
“What about me”
“You, you are not a student and should get a Pro” – Tim
My sister was looking into getting a base model M2 Air for the Adobe suite. I recommend she get the M1 16gb rather which costs the same. Although the design is dated, that extra ram comes in clutch and is a much better buy imo.
Who are these mythical college students with $1000 to drop on a laptop?
For students m1 air should be more than enough. If you want take the 16 gb ram model for more applications to run at same time.
M2 air peaks the temps quickly. More powerful chip without better thermal condutivity material inside it (leads to throttling) , really hard to suggest it to anyone for higher price then m1 air.
Is playing timberborn a workload?
Finding it to thermal throttle a workload so much that it becomes slower than the M1 air is opposite *every other review in existence*. You’re sure this isn’t a swap issue?
Also there is a “chunk of metal” in the M2 Air as well.
My M1 Air gets used for post-grad work (research and writing) and editing go-pro footage in Premier Pro, ironically making my purchase last year seem rather prophetic…
Can you Play Games though ? 🙄☝🏼
I do Roblox so that might be a problem. Even my 2017 air is a little bit slow for Roblox.
