So when the M1 Mac Mini came out, I bought the base model, thinking I could cope with 8GB of RAM and use external storage. Super wrong. Firstly, file sync platforms (we use OneDrive for work), *absolutely will not* sync to an external drive, since Monterey. Apple now puts a symlink on the external drive, and syncs back to your main drive, no matter what you tell it to do. So you wind up with a 1TB external SSD with like 1kb on it and your hard drive full. So do not get the 256GB and think you can use external storage.
I also found the 8GB of RAM was thrashing, constantly. So I ended up sticking it on eBay and getting the top spec Mac Mini.
As for heat – we have some M1 Airs at work and they will very, very rarely thermal throttle. Almost never.
Apple has still made the choice easy. Get the M1 MacBook Air, or get the M1 Pro MacBook Pro. The M2 MacBook Air is a good device but a horrible value with what else is in the product stack, and the SSD speeds as well as cooling concerns are too much of a got-ya to really recommend it to anyone. One last note, MacBook Pro 13, why are you still here.
Yeah, all those fingerprints look great. I can see why you wanted to sit on the other side and look at it.
Great take on the MacBook Air. It really is a choice between the refurbished M1 or the 512 M2, which is a BIG jump.
Good video.
I like to run smaller scale numerical simulations on a local machine before submitting them to a cluster for a scaled up run. These simulations can run for over a day on my 14in MacBook Pro and they will definitely throttle the M2 MacBook Air.
Perfect Mac setup, desktop Mac Pro, laptop MacBook Air, travel head phones a iPods max, workout headphones beats pro, phone iPhone mini, tablet iPad Pro 12” model.
So this show is shot in Canada. I just purchased the M1 MacBook Air 512 GB version 8 core cpu/8 core gpu at COSTCO with Apple Care on sale for $1599. COSTCO Canada has all M1 MacBook Air’s and Pro’s in store on sale at big discounts. Seems they are getting ready for M2 stock. If you go to the Apple store and pick out the same computer refurbished and add Apple care the price is the same.
The price of m2 air is not justifiable for a student
As a poli sci student that works in the AV department at a Canadian university, I can tell you that there’s a decent amount of students trying create video podcasts that severely overestimate the abilities of an M1/M2 air. I would love to sell my 2019 pro 16gb for an M-series pro though. At 1080p the Dell enterprise laptop on 11th gen I use for work to software encode hundreds of hours worth of video still slaps the new M-series Airs.
hopefully they improve with the M3 MacBooks when those come out…
honestly i feel like if portability matters, mbair wins. if power matters, mbpro wins. and it’s not really much bigger or heavier. so if you are in college any mbair is a solid choice (m1 or m2) with battery life abs portability.
awesome video and perspective as always. love the outdoor shoots!
These videos are so well done. You make this look so freaking easy, and it’s so hard to do. Making something this concise is next to impossible to me.
when i was in med school all i did with my computer was make powerpoint presentations, read pdfs and mangas, listen to music on spotify, and browse internet non stop (youtube, netflix, etc), i even threw in some light emulators for when i was bored waiting for an exam. so the 2015 macbook air has been more than useful for this whole time, not sure why the new air needs to render videos or have multicore functionality and such, i always thought that’s what the pro lineup is for. i view the air as just a light use computer for people who dont have any heavy workloads so the new M2 doesnt really make that much sense to upgrade to.
Told my sister to get the m1 MacBook Air with upgraded storage, while she did chicken out and not upgrade her storage, she does indeed love her Mac tho so what can I say
I still have my 2013 13 inch MacBook Air sure it’s not my primary machine anymore (got windows for value/performance and software) but I still use it a lot for productivity tasks. Which it’s perfectly capable of still. Still don’t know what Mac id want to replace it with…
Glad I bought the m1 I hardly use it but still happy with the purchase
What might push the Mac book th get hot might be Minecraft or some other game.
I’m glad I bought the M1 Macbook Air. I do like the aesthetic changes, but that even worse thermal throttling is an issue to me… even if I really don’t do heavy computing.
Imagine spending thousands of dollars on recording equipment but not bothering wiping the fingerprints off of the macbook for the video
3:37 And this Jonathan, is why vinyl skins are around. Yeah can use those douchy robots at DäBrandè, but they only offer up “so many options”. Now, ya go and shop on Vvivid vinyl, 3M, Oracal, cheetah, Avery, and list goes on. Can choose from Auto or Architectural ¹ vinyl wraps; which comes in just about every type, finish, color, etc…ya can think of.
Now for the negative(s) of just ordering the vinyl yourself: can be expensive ², not cutout for specific device ³, & ya need to “INSTALL” IT ⁴ ; HOWEVER, if gonna get a “case”/“shell” for laptop and screen protector for display…..does color matter 🤔
¹ Architectural Vinyl “wraps” are made for architectural objects: I.E. Tables, Countertops, Walls, Windows, basically think construction building and the stuff that goes into a house, apt complex, banks, stores, etc….water heater, microwave, fridge…..ANYTHING BUT AUTOMOBILES, as that would fall under the “auto/car/trucks/vans/etc” category AND as you can use auto vinyl for wrapping objects, say laptop, building accent wall or table top; I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND WRAPPING exterior of car w/ architectural vinyl as gonna act diff (adhesion, UV in some films, etc…) & removing compared to auto if wanna change to diff color or finish; not gonna be fun for some brands etc….(that said using architectural vinyl inside a car for say center console, dash would be great and keep in mind , won’t remove in same way as auto vinyl and some brands list architectural vinyl as PERMANENT, so keep that in mind and read the tech/sds specs or talk to rep and tell ‘em what want to do; EVERY BRAND HAS CS AGENT THAT WILL GUIDE AND HELP YOU, so don’t forget to call if get stuck.
² Cost: this can be all over depending on brand, finish, color, type, etc
³ it’s not pre-cut like DaBrand’s robots do for devices, so you’d need to cut the vinyl roll or sheets yourself to fit the device you want to wrap
⁴ last thing here is installing. Unlike other pre-cut skins that just take off backing and lay on and press down (if doing edges need to do bit more) and even normal install DBrand shows using hairdryer, which a roll of vinyl after I measured and cut the shape of device , would want to stretch and then shrink around edges, corners etc…and would need some kind of “heat gun” (hairdryer does work, but for some thicker vinyls, actual heat guns would be faster and give better results b/c hairdryer heat FAIK is 200° & some films may require “more heat” than literally what we call “hairdryer heat” for referring to “low heat” for heat guns etc… Would also need knife for cutting, a squeegee card for install or tuck tools and as don’t need all those tools; for some devices and projects when using uncut rolled vinyl, having proper tool can make job go easier and actually give a much better professional outcome
Ok, that’s my thoughts and opinions and thx for reading if made to the end, appreciate.
Have a great day✌🏻
