Garmin inReach devices already have the ability to let users communicate via satellite with text messages. Look at how expensive their plans are. I have a feeling that when this feature does come to the iPhone, it’s probably going to be only available through the major cell phone carriers (which sucks for those who use MVNOs to save money) and it will also be an expensive add-on option for those that can get it.

The EU isn’t a government it’s a politician union. USA doesn’t need to approve USBC for Apple to change it. They won’t have one USBC iPhone for the EU and another lightening iPhone elsewhere.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if Apple made satellite calls possible for free for all iPhone users in future? – Like they did with text messages via iMessage in the early days? This would actually be a total game changer – also the phones more expensive but hey – free calls and no need to have a carrier anymore.. you would just have to pay apple like idk… 5-10 Euros/Dollars a month for connectivity and that’s it. They have the technology to do so… think about it

I’m a mobile technician in the Ag industry, sometimes in remote places alone with no cell coverage ( and statistically one of the most dangerous occupations) . If the satellite feature works as advertised, we could ditch the sat phone . That would be a game changer for sure.
