This device isn’t designed for “Pro” use. If you’re doing anything other than basic photo editing or very minor video editing then the MacBook Pro is for you. But for the average person who’s just surfing the web and writing papers and emails this is plenty. With the integrated architecture of the M1 & M2 chips you don’t need a lot of ram. Plus Swap is an option for the few times a basic user might push the limits of their 8GB of Ram. Sure you can get 16Gb but for the average person its a waste of money.

The Air is for basic computer users the Pro is just for that the Pro’s. That’s why there are stark differences in the power and the amount of performance and efficiency cores between the M1 & M2 and the M1 Pro & M1 Max that are on the MacBook Pros.

Would you recommend the M2 for an essay based university course, where I’ll have multiple applications and tabs open at the same time? Was going to get the original M1 Air, but fell in love with the new colour on the M2! Debating whether the extra £200 is worth it

At least Verge should have said that webcam resolution meant nothing. 720p webcam with the same lens and sensor technology as 1080 one would have been even better than 1080. It would not split the light between higher pixel count. 1080 – is just a marketing differentiator. The actual good thing that happened to improve the webcam is not Megapixels but the sensor and lens tech.

I was skeptical that Apple could justify a $200 price bump when they announced the M2 Air and I’m still skeptical now that reviews are out. For instance, the review only measured 434 nits of peak brightness and that’s a very poor showing from the spec sheet which says it has a 500 nit display. It also only has 64 more vertical pixels that typically only shows menu bar information. Does that matter? It’s hard to say the additional speakers matter when Apple already has the best laptop speakers on the market. A 1080p webcam is a nice value add, but nobody else is going to care about your webcam quality when zoom and teams compress it to hell anyway. Once again, Magsafe is a nice addition as it opens up a usb c port, but you’ll still need a dongle to connect all your other peripherals and it’s a cable with only a single purpose, Charging. No data transfer can occur over Magsafe. Then there’s the M2 chip which seems to have most of its improvement in the GPU. I guess it makes sense that combining all the above would incur a price increase, it just doesn’t add up for me.

Is there nothing without this complaining?
The $200 price is mostly because of the new design, new chip and additional color options. Midnight color is 🔥
This new Air is 13.6, which is an upgrade. It is slightly lighter and it features a 1080p camera. What more do you want from Apple with an Air?
Remember, the Air is for the casual user, average user and light user. Not for a serious gamer or someone who is video editing/photo editing on a full time basis.

Thanks for a great review! I have a MacBook Pro from 2017! I really want a new MacBook Air. I don’t use it for heavy stuff, just a bit a of photo and video editing every now and then. Also editing podcast. But other than that just using Word and surfing the net. And Netflix. My biggest concern is it getting warm! Do you think this will be a problem for me? 🙂

The fact that Apple not only decided to stick with 256GB as the entry storage, but is in fact SLOWER storage than the previous model is absurd. It should at the very least have a note on their website specifying these details.
