The lightning on the back is actually nice feature. Because i work from home i often have my cell on vibrate. Problem is, set on a table, unless you check the screen, it is not obvious that you missed a call or a text. The backlighting could help also those with hearing issues. Like i set red for call from kids or anyone i do not want to miss a call from.

The light pattern on the back could be useful for some people, i find that a lot of people put their phone with the back up and don’t have sound on so then they could see if someone’s calling just with the look at the back
