I was watching the live stream but thought I would watch this too lol
I’m with you. I LOVE my thin and light MacBook. No issues with butterfly keyboard, but I suspect that problematic keyboard is why Apple used the Air, not the MacBook, as the basis for the first M1 chassis. I’m not surprised nor annoyed that Apple did not introduce a new design. One step at a time.
Lon. eGPUs will NEVER work with this device nor likely ever with any Apple Silicon. The basic architecture just doesn’t support that kind of expansion. If you need an eGPU, Bootcamp or both, stick with x86 MacBooks or PC laptops.
not an Apple fan but they did a really good job here, too bad most of my softwares need to run on Windows. Can you run CS-Go, Adobe Premier there also Lon?
Who else saw his stream yesterday about this laptop.
On eGPUs: From what I understand, Apple is not planning on supporting non-Apple silicon on their Apple silicon Macs, so they won’t add support for AMD/Nvidia GPUs in the future. But maybe they’ll make some Apple silicon eGPUs or something.
Why everyone talks about Intel instead of X86 ???? It’s ARM vs X86 not M1 vs Intel …
I just to inform everyone, that the air’s display is now p3 like the pro
im getting the macbook air space grey
Unless you can’t wait, I would wait a year before buying a Macbook. I’m guessing in a year they will release a refresh with a better webcam, smaller bezels, and more small optimizations. Plus in a year, a lot more apps are going to run natively on the M1 chip. It would be a better long term option.
As a mobile mechanic, I could see this being useful with my mobile hotspot for looking up parts and part numbers, and generate invoices. The laptop I use now is a 3rd gen i5 Dell which works great, but the battery life sucks. But because of the price, I am more likely to buy a Chromebook for that purpose
How about a touch screen, pen support, MicroSD slot, ample ports, 1080p webcam, 2-in-1 design, face unlock, etc?
Basic stuff the vast majority of working people use/need.
Maybe then Apple’s laptop market share will rise above 8%…lol
another good vid, thx
Watching this video in Boot Camp windows 10 on a 2017 iMac… 🤘😎
earlier macbook air 11.6″ was the best size, which is kinda what you were saying re 12″ (but 12″ has the bad keyboard)
Great review Lon! There is no support for BootCamp, however I read an article on laptop mag’s website that says the the Parallels team is working on getting Windows 10 running on these new Macs and they have a link to a Parallels webpage where people can subscribe to news and updates on their progress. Here’s the link to that webpage: https://b2b.parallels.com/Apple-Silicon
Everyone knows Bootcamp isn’t an option on these, but is there ANY means by which the M1 macs can be dual booted? Plenty of Linux distros run well on ARM. I wouldn’t buy a MacBook for the purposes of running Linux, but knowing I could go back to my comfort zone if I really didn’t like it would make the purchase much easier.
We won’t benefit. Quite the opposote. The performance benefit comes from integrated RAM. If other companies copy this, it will be the end of memory and GPU expandability. A huge loss for consumers, as is usual with the trends set by Apple.
I think a lot of people were hoping for a 1080p Face ID camera and a 14 inch MacBook Pro, I’m just glad the didn’t stick us with the Butterfly keyboard, lol.
Do you know if SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD V2 (2000MB/s – USB3.2 Gen 2×2 Type C) will work with new (M1) Apple Mac Book Air and Mac Book Pro with Thunderbolt / USB4 ports ?
If yes, It will be great if you could tell us transfer speed with this drive, because Mac Book Air SSD is about 2190 MB/s write and 2675 MB/s read speed
