Agreed! I am using my M1 every day, rocking it now for 6 months now in a development environment. It is in a class of its own, I have sold all my i7 laptops. I also think there is more hidden performance in the M1 chip, as a blogger and a content creator online, I can not see myself going back to a Windows Laptop.

It randomly gets hot for me when it’s been on for a while. I’m doing php dev with node and php storm. It slows down a bit and heats up after about 2 ~ 3 days of putting it to sleep after finishing work

For anyone planning to buy the M1 Pro over the Air, buy the Air and do the thermal mod instead. It’ll not only result in similar or better performance with literally no noise, but also save you the hassle of having to clean/fix/replace the inside fan in the long run.

After having been cheated by apple two times (I bought a macbook in 2010, and the OS did not receive support in 2011, after a very stupid problem with drivers; I bought another one in 2012, same thing, it did not receive any more support due to apple hate for nvidia), I would never buy any apple product even if it was the best in the world… Therefore my opinion is maybe biased… However, I cannot understand your points: 1) apple M1s do not overheat? I have a dell xps13 i5 and a chromebook Acer Spin 713 (with i5 too, that I use for programming, with crostini), while programming, I never hear the fan running… Typically, this happens for very intensive computational tasks (movie encoding, or when running my numerical simulations at very low resolutions), not when programming or compiling software; 2) battery life is long? Well, both the dell xps13 (with linux) and acer spin 713 battery life is about 12 hours: do you really need more than that? do you really program longer than 12 hours a day? 3) a lot of software is not yet compatible with apple silicon processors… just to name a couple that I use, the smartcard reader for my digital signature of the exams at the university and the vpn of my university… just two examples of software I use for work, let imagine other, more specialized software (CADs, engineering software, and so on!)… Of course this is only my personal opinion and probably the situation changes case by case and it is difficult to generalize: even among programmers, the tasks my be very different! I make software for numerical simulations (mainly in fortran, C/C++ and python) and I just develop my software on the laptop/desktop and then I recompile/test it on supercomputers, I just run very simple cases with very low resolutions on my laptop/desktop, but I would never be able to renounce to the easy of building software on linux for any other kind of computer, let alone any apple device…

It’s all true. Every bit of it. Switched to this machine for video editing and have loved every minute of it. Agreed with the fans. I am in super HOT environment. No AC and while the fan does turn on 100+ degree temps when working with FCP or transcoding media…way better than other Macs that turn fans on from the start screen. It is a “cold” machine. Great review.

The M1 Macbooks do have some limitations. Keep in mind that the M1 is a CPU improvement and not a GPU one. For anything that is GPU-related that you need to get done whether it is training ML models, gaming, video editing, and etc. the Windows laptops with dedicated GPUs will perform much better.
