My worry would be that the new ones can’t dual-boot Windows. I’ve tried using VM’s in the past but when developing real-time things like a CAN bus interface it just couldn’t keep up.

I suppose it would be nice to have the MacBook as a personal laptop and a Windows laptop for work things but right now on my 2014 MBP I have everything in one device and it’s pretty handy.

A Fullstack dev here :
Anytime I have minimum 2-3 vscode ( 1 angular server with chrome debugger , 1 or 2 node/express with debugger), redis server with docker, mongodb server, robo3t, 10-15 tabs, slack, 1-2 terminals running locally.

And my *8GB, 256GB* Macbook air bought last week handles them all easily while feeling much faster and snappier than my Latitude (quad core i5 8th gen, 16GB ram , Ubuntu).
Only downside is need of expensive dongle to connect to external monitor and usb. Keyboard, while very good, is not at par with Latitudes (& thinkpads).

Fun fact : build time for same angular project:-
on mba 156s, on latitude: 374s

Update: M1 macbook so far felt to me like using a new linux distro (albeit faster one with lot of extra apps). Need to tweak a bit here and there to get things installed. Linux users , I am sure will feel at home.

Hoping for: ability to dual boot Ubuntu on it. Ubuntu on this hardware would be the awesomest dev machine.

So far for me, Apple Macbook Pro M1 was super duper awesome. Solid machine to work on for any software developer, photography/videography editor. BUT recently, I faced an issue like closing all of my applications and shut down my machine(NOT SLEEP, which we all usually do), and turned out to be bad. My machine died as it never booted up. I didn’t know what happened BUT the Apple service center said it’s a motherboard failure, so it’s still unpredictabe. A machine is a machine after all. It can vary person to person. Although, I am getting a new replacement unit as it was still under warranty. (Lost all of my data)

Looking to get the upcoming M1X Macbook Pro for school, it will be my first ever Apple Laptop. What I’m most worried about is the OS.

Could you elaborate on battery life a bit more? On my M1 Air I get around 8h of battery life with normal office use. However its far from advertised (half the time).Which is actually bugging me

Biggest downside of mac m1 is that nothing works. For software development it’s a disaster.

Hello Kalle,

I am using the Macbook Pro M1 8/256, and building Flutter APKs/AABs via Android Studio (last version) takes a lot of time (Same as a 4-year-old HP Omen laptop i7 7th gen, 12GB, 128 SSD),.

Are you using the 8Gb version of Macbook Pro or the 16GB, please?

I don’t think that it is a good idea to recommend the Macbook Air version for developers, as it is fanless, and the CPU can’t maintain 100% speed for long.

tensorflow doesnt work natively but you can just install conda and run an environment from there
