firecorona If you really do only use your computer for surfing the internet, then you should really consider a cheaper laptop. You want one with an ssd,(solid state drive) just for practical reasons, but you don’t need it. I’m assuming you don’t take it to work since you share with your wife, so size shouldn’t be a concern. For just work stuff, like word processing or spreadsheets, a PC is much better. They run better, more efficient versions of microsoft office, and are made for those tasks

Ok this post will be long- but had to help people not to do the same mistake many have done, including myself. I love Apple products, especially iPhones/iPads, however MacBook’s (air, pro or any other version) is true pain and not worth buying, based on my experience. There is definitely future potential for MacBook, but needs a lot of work still – so avoid being one of the Apple lab-rats. I recommend only iPad/iPhone under Apple products, and to stick with Windows for laptop or PC (iPod is pretty much obsolete now, as you can use an iPhone to do the same thing and more). Build your pc if you can and choose Dell/Alienware for laptop. For the same price, you can buy a very versatile, and top performance laptop under many other brands. When you buy Mac, you don’t only pay for the product / service, but you pay for the Apple brand, which is facade and silly. It’s been turning out to be a fashion trend nowadays, especially due to marketing efforts from Apple’s side, to promote their product among celebrities, non-tech businessmen, movie/tv appearances, top Youtube users etc. I bought a MacBook Pro just to try and my experiences so far have been negative. It will let you to have the chic Mac experience, however from a technical point of view you will constantly be challenged to find ‘ways around’ to align your system to use 99% of the programs. You won’t be able to play many of the most popular games, or play them in a really low qual way due to running a Windows emulator- which defeats the whole purpose to choose a Mac. Moreover, you won’t have a DVD driver, meaning you will have to find ways to get those college book CD’s there using a pc or pay more for an external DVD drive. 95% of the world computer users use Windows, 4% Mac, and 1% others, there is a reason for that, stick with what is common trend, especially those in the university or school. Of course the Macbook air is enough for a student/casual user. What would a casual user need a core I7 and 1GB graphics card for? Nothing really… I just got a MBA 2012 and absolutely love it, I’m going to university in September and it is absolutely exact what I wanted – not what I needed. I could get by at uni with a £350 Windows laptop but I like the design of the MBA and the feel of OS X. I only got it because I had the cash to spend and if I could choose a laptop, the MBA would be it.

If you buy one, get 8Gb, 4Gb sucks and makes things laggy. I’ve owned both and would consider myself a power user.
