They went over kill on Mac Studio cooling, MacMini has strong enough cooling even for a M2 max. Let’s face it, Mac Mini cooler used to cool Intel fire hot APU’s.

@GregsGadgets You don’t mention the WiFi 6E on the new Mac mini, and also, we have no idea how well the M2 Pro CPU/GPU performs against the M1 Max CPU/GPU. Should’ve waited until we have some benchmarks on the new 2 new M2 Mac minis.

I would pick whichever one has the better Neural Engine performance. My apps are basically running full screen OCR all day long (using a macOS shortcut which does the OCR work.) I think that means my apps are limited by the Neural Engine’s speed. Which Mac would be best for me? I’m currently using an M1 Mini.

The question at the end is a bit of a pointless question because obviously the Mac Studio will get HDMI 2.1 and M2 chips relatively soon so it’s only behind for a few months.

I’ve just gone through this decision for myself. My use is home music production – not graphic design. I’m upgrading from an Intel Mini.

Start your decision on the Mac Mini M2 Pro……If base CPU speed is sufficient and 16GB ram is enough – the M2 Pro is for you. If you need really need 32 GB ram or more, and faster CPU, then the Studio is for you. In the end, it was a fairly simple decision – I think Apple knows what its doing. OH, and one more thing. The Studio has more graphics cores – so if you want the fastest Mac graphics, the Studio is for you.

And I’m sure we will see the Studio migrate to the M2 Max and Ultra soon enough…… so choose wisely, both the machine, and when you purchase.

For many of everyday type users, the base M2 Mini is already overkill, and a hell of a bargain.

I’m planning to upgrade from the original M1 base model. I mainly do heavy LightRoom and Photoshop work. A little video but not much. (I’m guessing this will keep getting bigger?) I held off buying the Studio at release and it killed me. I need more head room as LR and PS along with all my browser tabs chew up that memory. I just saw on Max’s video someone was selling the studio for $1,799 which adds another wrinkle. I’m very confused lol.

Consider what Apple has done for weird one-off computer generations: what if the Mac Studio was a transitional gap-filler and all non-MacPro machines that aren’t laptop form factors are just going to be MacMinis form factor?

Consider: the MacMini has more than enough space on the outside for all the relevant ports, and with M2 and presumably M3 it should be able to run all variations of them cool enough to not throttle. If they can pull that off without making it sound like a jet engine, it’s logical to keep the MacMini the desktop solution for anything that’s not a MacPro.

I predict about a 50/50 chance that the current MacStudio is a one-off and from now on, they’ll find a way to put M2 Max/Ultra inside a MacMini case.

In that case, depending on your needs, the current M2 MacMini Pro is your best solution for video capacity, and it exists now. But without knowing the arrival of a Max and Ultra M2 chip option (or M3) if you need faster compute and the graphics support isn’t your biggest focus, nor is AI, get the MacStudio Max.

Remember: if you can buy it, it’s obsolete, so get whatever you’re fairly confident will satisfy your current needs and a bit longer.

The computer I actually want is a 32″ 4k iMac with an M2 Pro, 32GB and 1 or 2TB SSD in it.

But in this world where that is apparently never going to happen, I’m not sure which option I should go for with a separate monitor. The M2 Pro 32GB 1TB Mac Mini would fit but having less IO and half the memory bandwidth does give me pause. I need to think about how I use IO and see if I do actually need the +2 USB C ports, or can go with the 4 TB. For the other part I’m going to wait to see some comparative benchmarks.

The m2 mini has a feature missing from the Studio Max — missing front ports. The feature is less utility.

I’m pretty much set on getting a plain-vanilla M2 mac mini. But depending on how reviews go (including the thermal performance stuff, as mentioned in the video), I might spend extra to get the M2 Pro mac mini.

I honestly have decided to wait for an M3-based system. Strictly on the rumor that it will contain the ray-tracing engine that Apple was prototyping for their A-series bionic chips. It was not released due to thermal constraints of the iPhone format. But if it can get into a 3nm M-series chip for a desktop unit that thermal issue goes away so quickly. I am not in any hurry sine this is likely to be the last desktop I will purchase (I am close to retirement and plan to get off the tech treadmill when I retire but will make a series of final strategic upgrades)
