The pricing is truly odd. If the Mac Studio gets updated with the M2 Max and stays at $1999, then it’s really a terrible value to get the Mac Mini.
I hate to see apple going down this path again. They did this in the 80/90s where they complicated their product stack. Here let me solve it for you:
Chips:
M1 – Make it simple, only offer one not a pro – this is old, think “SE” style.
M2 – Newest, best, budget
M2 Pro – More Power, more gains
M2 Max – The top of the line – Similar or better performance to EPYC or Xeon Gold CPUs.

The computer I have is the best choice. Plus, my wallet is better too
I’m currently using a 2.6Ghz 6 core i7 2018 MBP 15″ with 32GB of RAM and have had it for over 3 years. I don’t really move my laptop anywhere and it stays docked into my triple monitor setup. I definitely can’t push all 3 monitors without hiccups so I just use 2 of them, leaving the 3rd monitor off unless I’m using my work-provided, much newer MBP which can power all 3 monitors without any issue. I’ve been looking to get a mac mini or mac studio within the next year. So far, I’m leaning towards the Mac Studio, and given that I’m willing to wait for a year, I’m sure by then it would have the new M2 chips or better.
The M2 Mini is going to eat the sale of the Mac Studio. The M2 Pro with 12 cpu and 19 gpu is better in cpu and same gpu performance as the base Mac Studio while the Mini is smaller, lighter, same price at $2000.
I just ordered a studio today, and did it because of the extra port, and the potential for better cooling.
No mention of the 200GB/s memory bandwidth on the pro vs the 400GB/s on the max.
I’m typing this on an M1 Ultra Mac Studio with maxed out specs aside from having just a 2TB drive. I’m still fine with my decision here because of the GPU horsepower, and this Mac Studio has been an absolutely fantastic computer. I even play some EVE Online on this thing and it works great, and I have yet to hear it make any noise.
Thanks for another good video. The current price and option differences between the new Mac mini and the Mac Studio doesn’t seem like a big deal to me. That’s because the current Mac Studio is very likely going to be upgraded soon, like over the next few months. So to me, I can just wait and see what the changes are when the new Mac Studio is released if I want to, or I can buy the new Mac mini now. I have the original Mac mini M1 mini … which I planned to use as a “bridge” purchase until I could afford the Mac Studio. The new Mac mini temps me, but I think I’ll just hold out and buy the new Mac Studio when it is released. I don’t think it is going to be a long wait, and figuring all of this out took about 10 seconds….it’s sort of a “no-brainer” to me. But maybe I’m not seeing another side to it.
This is what happens when a once-visionary-maverick-company begins to throw everything at the wall in the hope that something sticks.
Just give the pros a CUSTOMIZABLE desktop form factor for a REASONABLE price!
Ooops! My bad! I have just uttered the two words in the English language that Apple regards as egregiously OBSCENE. Corleone, Gangster.
Spatial audio on the Mac mini yet like Dolby Atmos? Probably not, so Mac Studio.
Mini has more recent Bluetooth and WiFi capability.
How will 16 memory vs 32 memory affect performance on world of Warcraft.
What about the memory bandwidth it 2x faster on the studio M1 Pro vs the m2 pro mini. Seems like if you are retrieving writing or using ssd for ram that would make a difference. Maybe the m2 studio will keep the gpus and bumps the cores and keep the fast memory band width.
Odd that the m2 Mac mini claims 4K & 240hz over hdmi. The most I’ve seen hdmi 2.1 handle is 4K 165hz
I’m waiting for the M9 chip in 20 years.
Good suggestion! I’d rather choose the Mini for the newer M2 chips.
Studio is going to have an M2 soon as well.
Call me when a 27” Apple silicon iMac comes along.
Mac Studio M1 MAX is $1799 at this moment.
