The R3D comparison piqued my interest — are you able to perform the same benchmarks with the CODEX HDE for •offloading• from ARRI ALEXA family of cameras, like the Mini LF for ALEXA 35?

I think that the base Mac Studio, with 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD ($2599 on the US store) is probably the sweet spot for most users.

That will match the SSD bandwidth and RAM capacity of the base Ultra.

I am very tempted by the 96GB version, which requires the 38 GPU Max processor and ends up at $3199.

I do memory limited things though. I can’t run them in 64GB RAM+16VRAM on Windows. Right now I just spin up an Azure or AWS instance with enough RAM.

I can probably wait for M3 before dishing out on some medium iron … but can I say that the Mac Pro was deeply disappointing.

Might as well call it the Mac Studio Super Size.

I made the same decision when I purchased my M1 Studio Max a year ago March, the performance difference just wasn’t worth the extra $2K.

I do a lot of 3D modeling in blender & It’s time for me to upgrade my Mac, should I get the last Mac intel machine and pair it with an nvidea eGPU and save a bundle or spend a lot more to get the new m2 max studio?

There was a time when you might want to ‘future proof’ by getting, say, an i7-6700k instead of an i5-6500 in 2015. Because at that time, the multicore performance would be the bottleneck down the road, AND importantly, the single core performance of the i7 was also a noticeable improvement over the single core performance of the i5. So you would want the i7 for an extra $300. But I agree with Max here. For so many of us, the single core performance of the M2 Max and the M2 Ultra will be the bottleneck down the road (unless you are regularly doing intensive tasks). So yeah, saving the $2,000 and upgrading your computer four years from now will be so much better than spending the extra $2k and waiting eight years to upgrade. Both have the same monetary cost, but the former will benefit so many more people (again, that doesn’t include those who are doing heavy work). I think that the binned M2 Max $2,000 machine, upgraded to a minimum of 1tb of internal storage, is the best deal for a Mac in at least the past three years (understanding that the 27″ 5k iMac was an outstanding deal if you wanted a computer with a very high-end, first party display).

I would really like it if you have a virtual machine or two running while you do some of these tests. A lot of developers have a virtual machine for a server or iOS simulator running while they develop. Would be great to know if those affect the performance between the max and ultra.

Hey Max, always appreciate your reviews! Did you test Canon RAW 8K? That’s what we shoot. It’d be great to find out how these two Macs handle it. Not having to create proxies would be amazing. Thanks 🙏
