So you can’t export vids over that tale more than 20 mins to export on the M1 air?
If you’re looking for more performance than the MacBook Air and you don’t want to spend a dollar over $1299, the answer is not the M2 MacBook Pro. It is instead the M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB RAM for $1199. I’m sad to say I’d still pick that for its launch price from November, 2020, but that’s where we’re at. 16 GB RAM makes way more difference than a cooling fan, so either the $1200 M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB RAM (occasionally available for $1019 refurbished) or the (often) $1800 M1 Pro 14” MacBook Pro. The new Air is great. The M2-based Pro has no place in my eyes. I can’t tell you how much I’d rather that Apple have a $1600 15-inch MacBook Air with the 10-core GPU and faster power adapter as standard instead of this rehash, but pricing is everything. If Apple had dropped the price at all, I’d be way more interested in the M2-based Pro, and would applaud the re-use of tooling. I think it’s safe to say the Touch Bar is why that machine can’t get any cheaper. It made its way down from $1799 to $1299 a few years back, and there it has stayed.
I wonder if Apple is market testing the M2 MacBook Air up against the entry 13 inch pro with the Touch Bar to see if people are willing to let go of the “Pro” moniker and have the M2 MacBook Air serve both the consumer and prosumer audiences because it’s totally capable of doing so. Remember, the last time they tried to get rid of a product category (the MacBook Air) it totally backfired on them and they ended up having to back track after people didn’t go for the 12 inch MacBook. It seems they are now being cautious and are letting the consumers decide a product line’s fate (RIP HomePod, iPod touch, etc). If sales drop enough on the entry 13 inch Pro they may discontinue it. If enough people still purchase it, I can see them having two “SE” type models in the line up with this 13 inch MacBook Pro and the M1 MacBook Air.
“Swear to jobs”, you thought you could just sneak that one in there Rene lol
M2 still doesn’t support 3 monitors. Wont buy it
I really feel this exists just as a benchmark device. They wanted the M2 to stretch its legs with active cooling to look good on graphs, because there’s really no other benefits to this over the M2 air – particularly given how little apple have made use of the touchbar (which i think could have been so much more than what apple did with it).
Theres no form factor reason for keeping the old design around, like with Mac minis for servers, and there’s no reason a cheaper 14inch (minus the miniLED and M2 instead of M1 pro) couldn’t have been released from a company as big as apple.
With both of these M2 devices, I really don’t think the pricing is compelling if you upgrade them. Once you’ve got 16gb of ram and a 1tb SSD, you’re only a few hundred off the pro devices, and far more expensive than premium windows devices (the XPS 13plus with a P-series 12th gen i7, a 3.5k OLED and ir face unlock without a notch is several hundred pounds cheaper than a similarly speced M2 air)
Unless you need 15 hour battery life, are firmly in the apple ecosystem or work with media a lot, I really don’t find these M2 devices compelling, at least with UK pricing. The base models are theoretically well priced, but I don’t actually know what user is leveraging the power of m2 who’s happy with a 256gb SSD and 8gb of ram.
I’d not buy one, its old system with new cpu much like me updating my windows pc just changing my cpu.
Tbh the unwrapping bodies were bit too loud compared to voice levels. Nevertheless still enjoy the well produced content thank you
Look at the Air and Pro 13 models and think in terms of availability and supply chain. Apple wants to sell computers. The more the merrier. “Everything is great if sales don’t suck.” — Guy Kawasaki
I recently got the MacBook Pro M1 Pro. I love it, but I can’t imagine the M2 version being worth it to upgrade over. I would recommend getting the RAM upgrade to 32GB. I’m a software developer who uses Docker and it eats up all of the RAM.
“BETTER THAN AIR?” What a stupid question!
The fan is super important for using your laptop outside in the sun. The MacBook Air quickly overheats since it has no way to cool itself
Wait a couple of years….These M2s, along with OG M1 MBPs, will hit the re-sale market as, relative to Apple, absolute bargains. For a few short months (weeks?), there’ll be a hectic rush of YT vids with breathless buyers touting their awesomeness….similar to the “headless” MacBook craze a few months ago.
You put together a convincing case for buyers to get the M2 MBPro, Rene. I have a 2019 Intel 13” MBPro, and I don’t care for the Touch Bar. Yet, my wife and daughter want their next MacBook to have the Touch Bar. Great content, Rene!
Apple should have recycled the old MBP chassis and prioritized M2 chip inventory for the new MacBook Air. These MBP’s can’t possibly sell well.
I think Larp is my new favorite word.
This feels more like a MacBook SE than a MacBook Pro, except that it is the same price as the Air when spec-matched, and an SE would be cheaper.
Where is the review?
Waiting for my first ever MacBook that is the M2 MBP to be delivered in 2 weeks (:
Keep up the great work!
