Just felt like Apple decided to use their iPhone SE approach on the 13 inch. Maybe it will work out for them, much like the SE.

No. M2 MBP is terrible. Only a little better than the awful M1 MBP and far too late. Here’s why:

First of all, the M1 MacBook Air with 16 GB RAM is less than the base model M2 MacBook Pro, and 16 GB RAM versus 8GB makes way more difference to the user experience than does M2 vs. M1. Or, go ultra budget and get the base model MacBook Air refurbished for $850, as you should have done a year ago. You’re literally saving $450, or 1/3 the price of the computer, doing that, for a very similar experience.

Second, If you care about the difference between M2 fanless and M2 with a fan, you’ll care much more about the difference between M2 and M1 Pro, and you’ll notice the limitations of the base model 13” MacBook Pro with the small drive and RAM config. So, you shouldn’t buy either of these computers. You should buy the base model 14” and get the better performance of that product, along with the way, way better display, the better webcam, speakers, and mics, the more ports, the better keyboard and the additional screen real estate. It’s $500 more, and it would be silly not to spend that money.

The M2 MacBook Air is also hard to justify versus the 14” MacBook Pro, but there’s at least a couple of arguments for it (which do not apply to the 14” Pro)
-You want the colors
-You want the thinnest and lightest modern Mac you can get
-You’re buying from Apple, and you can’t get them to price match the 14” to $1800 even though other retailers regularly sell it for that
-You video call a lot, but $1800 is out of the question.

M2 MBP is for no one unless heavily discounted. Stop recommending it!

The old hardware is just a function of the pandemic. Apple built this older model with new chip to give them a reliable supply in the current supply chain environment. This is a compromise product because we can’t get a new M2 Air yet. And when available we don’t know how much supply of the M2 Air there will be. This product was created to use existing manufacturing lines with parts that Apple can reliable get in volume to ship an M2 product in large volume. Is it the product Apple wants to ship, no, but it is better than a full redesign they can’t produce in volume for 6-8 months. After Apple has scaled up manufacturing of the M2 Air chassis then this product will either go away entirely or get a similar redesign. This is Tim Cook and Apple doing some supply chain management to deliver products on time given the constraints all tech companies find themselves in today. Apple has solved this differently because the Air/13″ Pro are SUCH HIGH VOLUME products that they couldn’t redesign BOTH simultaneously and produce at the volume necessary to satisfy demand. It’s that simple.

Finally, an intelligent explanation over the positioning of this product. The hardware being old, Apple will be able to discount heavily into enterprise (and education?) markets and still make good margins. The tangibles – case, screen, keyboard, trackpad – were in effect 6 years ahead of their time when this was launched, so remain competitive today. I would also look at what IBM is doing with Apple products for additional clues over their direction here.

3:43 here is the answer. It’s for corporate buyers and schools/universities. They need a no frills, capable, durable, well tested, proven design. At minimum it maintains physical compatibility with whatever MacBook Pro you’ve been using since 2016ish.
