I may be completely wrong, so roast me if I am, but perhaps Apple silicon will likely never be great at games. Hear me out. If the best graphics on PC’s use highly specialized processing that is also very power intensive, and ARM is designed for efficiency, is it possible the kinds of processes baked into the silicon design of Apple’s architecture will never optimize for that type of work? Am I off?

My Macbook Air arrived today a week earlier than Apple said it would. This is my first M-series Mac, I have the last Intel iMac and have to say disappointed with the MBA it’s not the speed demon I was expecting and that’s just doing basic tasks I haven’t loaded my main apps yet. My Intel iMac is just as fast. On the plus side the size is what I was hoping for and I thought the sound for a laptop is good and screen is excellent. I used it for a couple hours and checked the bottom for heat and it was still cool. So I will probably keep it and should handle the software I plan to run on it.

it is crazy that the apple silicon only uses 1W to archive 60+ (1xx) fps on LOL while others maybe need at least 20w. it is crazy efficient. This is also the reason why I really like apple m-series macs as they deliver a crazy efficient computing system that was only used in data centres before to now any regular customer that wants to but it. power consumption accumulates. don’t tell me that you don’t care about power cost. saving each computer 20W will accumulate up to 34*10^9 W which is over 34MWh(per hour of use). if you use a computer from 2008 and upgrade it to one that came from 2014, it will save over 140W when delivering similar performance, if we count the same amount of 1.7billion desktop computer users, this will accumulates up to 238MWh per hour of use(power consumption). if we use the M1 Ultra as a baseline, considering that it does not suffer from the TLB issue and delivers similar performance to the 3090 with 12900K which saves 300W of power, it will contribute to a power saving of 810*10^9 (81MWh) per hour of use. Please remember that it is only in the scale of HOUR of use, not year (which most green org like to use when delivering a figure that is not big enough but still wants to make it sounds a lot). But it is clear that it is impossible to get everyone to switch to M1 Ultra and it is unrealistic to calculate the amount of power that can be saved by an efficient and powerfu system. it is because the actual power consumption depends on the workload and the comparison needs to be accurate when you know the initial config of their PCs.
All I am saying is, regardless of what you are using, switching to a more efficient system is always a better choice for both the survival of mankind and the conservation of the environment. (environment problem that I care about: acid rain. Mankind’s problem that I care about the most: running out of fossil fuel without finding a proper replacement.)
