I’m a computer science student as well. Which should I choose? What would you suggest choosing between the M2 Pro and M2 Air. I work with visual studio code, do some photo and video editing, and create websites and use an external monitor. Is the fan truly necessary, and do you think the M2 air is a better option than the pro?

Perfect review. Very professional. I’d say that if you are video editing often or all the time, you wouldn’t even be watching this review, meaning you’d go with more expensive machines. I was really looking for something that loads up browsers quicker, that’s what you want from a computer. I thought it depended on the wifi speed mainly but it’s also the laptop. If you write a lot, I tested the Pro and Air in the shop, the 13 inches with the Pro you feel the edge pressing on your palms more, the Air is thinner since the 13″ are shorter than the 14″ and up. If you just edit/render one or two videos a week, who cares about the slower performance. The only thing I worry a bit is the lack of a fan but at the same time you won’t risk breaking it (the fan) for sure… lol. Because when you buy it you are tempted to buy the 200$ insurance (for the fan!).

90% of my work is Lightroom, Capture1, On1, Photoshop and Affinity, the other 10% are Video with Filmora and most of the times editing 1080p clips. I think this time I won’t go for the Pro, I’ll stick with the new Air.

If you use your laptop mainly for editing/writing/research — with several tabs open while, say, running Apple Music or playing videos on one of the tabs, am I correct in assuming that’s just “light usage” as compared to, say, editing videos? Would you agree that this M2 Air would be better suited for me (in its original configuration: 8gb / 512 gb storage) as compared to the Pro? Would appreciate your response. This is a very helpful review, thank you so much!

I watched like 30+ videos on the MacBook Air compared to the 14” pro and by far this is the best video on YouTube! Also, the multiple tabs being open, 8GB ram vs the upgrade and 4k video rendering on both- nobody discussed it like you did. You just made this an easier purchase decision!
