The SSD performance issue is overblown. Unless you’re doing a lot of file copying it won’t matter much. And if you’re doing a lot of file IO then you probably need more storage anyway

The problems you had and described sound WAY more like software errors and not an issue with the hardware / M2 and its cooling…

And the “problems” about the 256GB model are also (not your fault) only half backed as often when tech reviewers come up with some stuff they discovered. The lower speeds are only for sequential read and write. For random read and write – which is much more important – the M2 is still faster even with the 256GB base model. And for the time you do need those sequential speeds, the 1.5GB/s are still extremely good and much better than 99% of people had before the M2 MBA.

Good video bro! I have the 14 inch MacBook Pro M1 Max and really love the mini-LED screen with the 120 hz refresh rate, but wish I would have went with the M1 Pro for the better battery life. However, the MacBook Air has been Apple’s best selling Mac for quiet some time for a reason and is still the best performing/efficient laptop for the majority of people.

Yea the M1 Air is better than the M2 unfortunately. Apple dropped the ball on the M2 products (Air and Pro)

The m2 MacBooks are the AirPods 3 of macs. The cheaper and more expensive models are easier to recommend

I think you and Snazzy labs are both right in comparisons to the MacBook. My mom still has that machine so I use it a fair bit and it’s unbelievably light and simple, idk I could convince her to go with this M2 MBA. As an M1 MBA owner I was pretty sure I would make the upgrade if they did something fun with the new design or color options, but so far I’m not convinced at all.

I feel like I’ve made up my mind: I want an M1 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro to replace my 2015 Core i7 15-inch MacBook Pro. Thought about the M2 Air but this video sold me on avoiding it. But at this point in the year, should I just wait for the M2 Pro? My ‘15 MBP definitely has a lot of life left in it, and I could easily use it for another few months/ years. Just want to upgrade to the latest and greatest.

Your video makes so much sense
I bought the m2
16 ram 512 drive 10 core gpu
Ya did I over spend I think I did
Why well after 12 years with my MacBook Pro I kinda decided to come out of my man cave and get with the times
I realized that the pro model was well over what I really needed
So I went with the m2
In hind site should have got the air m1 but just loved the new design and so decided to get that
Only cues I could afford it

Great analysis – Too many reviewers were wowed by the design (“It’s pretty!) or over-embellished the SSD/heat issue (Skip this one!). But Apple’s pricing muddied the waters for making the M2 MBA a “no-brainer”. You can go cheaper with the M1 MBA or more performant with 14″ MBP this time around. My analysis is the new MBA is an excellent “next-gen” for Apple but not the best choice for many.

By the way, they’ll sell a ton of them.

I feel an ideal dream mac would be
12gb of ram standard, up from 8gb, no reason to actually have 8gb now
Fanless design with an actual heat sync. At least in that scenario apple could at least get away with actually being able to sustain performance for a while longer just to give reviewers and that hard core budgeter something more to hold on to
I’d love to see a 90hz display, or greater even though that’d probably would never exist, it’d be nice to see.
