I ordered the M2 Air with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM. Stuck with the 8 core GPU. I don’t use Final Cut or Logic Pro, just Photos. I’m also coming from a 2019 13″ MBP with the Intel i5 and 8GB of RAM, so I expect to see a nice performance improvement. I think this review made a lot of sense.
The 2 Thunderbolt ports on the M2 MacBook Air are 4, not 3.
I agree the M1 is fine. I’m trading mine in while I can still get a decent return. If I had upgraded to 16GB of memory 2 years ago, I would have stayed with it. That said, I really love the M2 Air. I didn’t get the 10 Core GPU, but did upgrade the SSD and RAM. This feels like a much more balanced machine, where the previous wedge design felt unevenly weighted towards the screen. The sound is an improvement. Not as loud, but definitely more detailed and vocalsvoices do seem like they are coming from the screen instead of the side speakers. The display with the little extra added real estate does feel bigger. Keyboard is great. Sooo…Yeah, if you need portability with great battery life and you are not spending Pro money, this is a great laptop!
Is the multitasking performance worse than the m1 when it comes to opening a lot of apps like you did and had severe slow downs? Thanks.
THIS. I’ve had a 14 w/ 32gb since November. It’s great for a professional. That said, it’s flat out embarrassing for Apple to only give 8GB of Ram for the price they charge…Which costs MORE than the M1! People want to say M chips are more efficient with Ram…bull, 8gb of Ram is fine for maybe a grandma who does the bare minimum on a computer. People now are all about multitasking, even non-professionals…. And multitasking even on lower end software is taxing…
Great Video Jerry
I dived in a bought a 14 inch Macbook Pro it covers all the bases
I’m still loving my M1 512gb. For me it is the perfect laptop and has performed flawlessly. Battery life is still insanely good. The M2 doesn’t really seem like work upgrading.
I think you notice differences between MBP and MPA trackpad clicks because of the different settings you might have. If you go to trackpad preferences, enable silent clicking and set Click to Light then they should be the same.
Jerry thank you for the detailed review. I am not a Pro User, but I intend to buy the M2 MBA to use it daily for my personal business (consulting), which on top of the regular MS Office, editing documents, sending emails, browsing internet and watching videos, would entail spending a lot of time in conference calls mostly MS Teams and Zoom. Do you think that the machine will throttle/ overheat during my conference calls considerably? My question is more about the 512 GB / 16 GB RAM model (I never buy entry models as I like to future-proof my laptop purchases). Thank you!
Your conclusion is exactly right. One thing to consider, though, is future “Apple support for M1 Air”. Just like when I had the choice between iPad Air 1 (32 GB) and iPad Air 2 (16 GB) for the same price, in hindsight, buying the newer Air 2 was a better option, since it has been supported up to the present day. The 16 GB, however, suck.
And in general, Apple is renowned for “killing” completely capable machines at a whim.
Got it! Slowly a finger in the back.
Cool video as expected.
Always like your well balanced reviews. I wouldn’t get the M2 MBA I’d go for the 14 Pro but I still have an older 16 inch MBP which works fine so I’m not going to sell it and lose a load of money. I liked your three options: Economy – M1 MBA; Power- 14 inch Mac Pro MBP; Looks – M2 MBA.
Does the M1 Air lags like M2 Air with the same usage in this video?
2015 retina mbp is dying on me, so I got this one
I find Apple’s pricing scales for the M2 Air a bit baffling. For eg, I already have the M1 Air (256g/16g RAM configuration). I produce/ edit videos and slideshows (only about 1 every month), as well as writing/emailing, etc. I’d probably go for a 512g/16g RAM spec next time but that’s £1749 for the M2 Air here in the U.K. The 14 inch M1 pro with the same spec is only £150 more than the M2 Air. Upgrading to the Pro would be better value for me. I’m not in a rush though.
Nice design poor designed inside a heat under performer thermo throttling 😡
Wait till Apple fixes it or get the Pro 14” on sale….
Go to Max Tech for the truth on the New Air….they are showing whom the Apple shills R now…one here as example😒
agreed, MagSafe makes me carry another cable which is not much use. I upgrade my m1 16/256 to m2 with 24GB/1T. I cannot stand the weight and battery life of 14pro. Plus I carry my iPad as my 2nd screen.
MBA M2 is just too pricey. By the time you spec it w/ 512/16 it’s within spitting distance of the far superior MBP 14. Unless the size is incredibly important to you, I think the MBP is a better bet. MBP has allowed me to move to a single machine vs. having both a laptop and a desktop mac. Two ASD and the MBP screen as a third has been terrific. MBA lack of dual display support is a deal killer.
