I went for the 14″, 10/24 variant, and I’m quite happy. I noticed the trackpad is a little smaller on the 14″, which allows my wrists a better place to rest vs. my old 2018 15″, which was never comfortable to type on. I’m working on a pretty intense timeline in Logic Pro (over 7 hours of recorded music that I need to clean, repair, organize, and arrange), and the only time it has acted bothered has been when using some plugins through Rosetta. I think I would’ve been happy with the M1 Pro – I don’t do all that much video work, and it would’ve saved some money – but it’s nice to have the capacity for the future.
I have a 14” M1Pro that is having problems with crashes and restarts occurring spontaneously, webpages restarting or having to be reloaded while reading an article, several episodes of an SSD external HD attached directly to the MBP unmounting spontaneously and when selecting a website using Safari, the page begins to load and freezes. Trying to go to another page results in the same and I have close out of Safari and reload it. I’ve had numerous calls to Apple Support and I’m on my 2nd Tech expert and we are trying a 2nd total erase of my hard drive and reload of my data. Very frustrating. BTW, this is the 2nd 14” MBP. The first one had a hard drive total crash while working with Apple support which had to be returned! I’m wondering if there is a serious problem with the new M1 chips and Monterrey 12.1! This is not happening on my mid-2018 15” intel chip MBP and M 12.1! I may just may have to go back to Catalina and see if that fixes the problem.
I have two issues that appeared with the update 12.1 of macos. The first one, sideacar disconnects every time and stops displaying in my ipad pro. The second one, when I connect my airpods max, this seems to crash the bluetooth of the airpods and it needs to be reseted to restore the connection.
I resolved the kernel panic/clamshell issue by simply switching to new Thunderbolt 4 cables from CalDigit, rather than older Thunderbolt 2 or 3 cables I had laying around from older machines (using CalDigit Element Hub and LG Ultrafine 5K display, so not apples to apples for your issues with OWC hub and Pro Display XDR).
I purchased the MBP M1Pro 16inch with16GB of Ram and 1TB storage. I had the 2019 MBP with 8 cores 32GB Ram and 2TB and this new machine blows it away. 1st no fan noise. The previous machine was very noisy with the fans running a lot. I too must complain about overnight Kernal Panics/restarts while in sleep connected to a CalDigit T3 dock with the lid open. So I turn the machine off at night. I can not figure out why it is doing this. My old machine would do this occasionally as well. I have tried to update the dock’s firmware but have been unsuccessful. The Dock is connected to a Samsung 27″ 4K display.
I currently use a 2018 intel 15” MacBook Pro connected to a Kensington thunderbolt dock, and I experience crashes frequently. I believe it has something to do with Ethernet over thunderbolt but have yet to test that theory
No crashes at all. Same 16” config to caldigit thunderbolt 4 bridge to ultra wide LG monitor.
I got the 14″ M1 Pro with 8 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 32 GB RAM, and 2 TB SSD on November 5th. I’ve used it in clamshell mode with my CalDigit TS3+ Dock (Thunderbolt 3) and I never once had that crashing problem you mentioned.
Still don’t care 3 months latter
I have exactly the same issue as you with my 32gb 16” M1 max when connected to a caldigit ts3 lite thunderbolt 3 hub connected to a monitor in clamshell. Basically it will KP and reboot once woken up from sleep. It doesn’t always happen, but even with the latest beta it can happen.
I do have external SSDs and Ethernet attached to the hub.
Luckily it never affects any work; it only happens waking from sleep in clamshell. (Super loud fans then a reboot). But it’s hyper annoying.
I haven’t seen the SD speed issue. 1 TB is enough as I use a 4 TB external thunderbolt SSD for larger projects.
Other than that agree with all your pluses. It’s easily faster than my former much more expensive 10 core Vega 64 iMac Pro, and it runs on battery a long time.
Well done!
i would hope so. it’s only been 3 fucking months!
With the M chips just retire reviews of them. Yes are fast for everything. Good night.
I went with the 14″ because I have an external display for when I am at my desk. When I am not at the desk, I wanted to have the extra portability of the smaller computer.
My 2016 macbook pro has the same restarting issue, but it happens whenever its charging. My iPad Pro slows down to a crawl whenever I leave it connected to a dock. Apple certainly has a serious issue related to thunderbolt and USB-C connected docks.
4:40 Then name another comparable laptop with this much power and battery life with a similar weight and thickness. Oh right, it doesn’t exist…
Does the crash happen when not connected to this third-party accessory? If so, it’s Apple’s fault. If not, it’s the other vendor’s fault. Duh.
Your slow SSD is because of memory leak in the RAM. You can test your SSD speed, and should be really fast, giving you the correct speeds. But if you check your RAM usage when is running super slow, is because you ran out of it (yes 32GB is not enough! 16GB is even worse, that is why none of the YouTubers got that version, and subtly advises for minimum of 64GB). Monterey seems to be running Swift’s own memory management, and is a nightmare just like the Apple Maps in the past. I just wonder if you can downgrade to Big Sur. The not so new CEO doesn’t believe in “don’t ship the product until is perfect”; but rather believes in good enough, and strong marketing to produce good sales. Therefore, he is only concerned when the numbers go down, hence, the extra ports, old scissor keyboard, and better thermals on the new Macs. Guess we just can’t have it all.
The 16″ MBP weighs 4.8 pounds. If that’s too heavy for you, see your doctor and get your lazy ass on a workout plan.
I have a MacBook Pro 15 and my computer crashes when sleeping for long periods of time, when completely unplugged from everything. I think it’s a “deep sleep” issue with macOS.
My system crashes for no reason, storage size and speed issues, and it’s a heavy laptop so size down. But the screen is great! And it has a lot of ports! Battery is great but it’s too heavy to carry so it always stays plugged in. I predict “pros” will be leaving this brick behind when the new Mac Pros hit later this year.
