Laptop is still so much more advanced and efficient as a productivity machine than the iPad. I myself bought an iPad Pro (with pen and keyboard..) to replace my old Windows laptop but after trying it out I couldn’t and reverted back to using my less powerful laptop. My iPad Pro is now purely consumption device (rarely too) and I feel it’s a waste of money..
Thank you, Mark! SO helpful! :)… lol at you looking amazed at the Air!
Hi, yet another great video. Thanks. Will the M1 MBA drive 2 monitors? How does it handle running LightRoom Classic and Photoshop 2021 at the same time? Does it handle some basic video editing?
☕️
I used the 2018 iPad Pro with the magic keyboard2 for a couple of years (which was a really good, although unhelpfully desk-bound, combination), before trying, and failing, to get to grips with last year’s magic keyboard. After watching your videos, along with a host of others, I bought the MacBook Air (16/512) a few weeks ago and haven’t looked back. It is an awesome machine; and combined with Big Sur it constitutes the most pleasurable, most productive piece of kit I have ever used. Thanks very much for your excellent videos. Cheers.
☕️ – it’s the bit in your video I eagerly wait for! (Sad!)
Thanks for giving me advice to get the base M1 Macbook Air for my son. He loves it. Cool Gas Monkey shirt at the start of the video, as well. That’s a good show.
I tried the MacBook Air but got an 11“ IPad Pro with Magic Keyboard instead. I’m really happy with it.
☕️
I am a strong believer that no one should ever use chrome on any laptop at all – just leaving this here
I think you instantly became my new favourite tech reviewer.
Thank you.

Great video.
What slows me to buy this new mac is the concern about possible and probable incompatibility issues of m1 and Big Sur with softwares and plug ins.
Can you play SIMS on it? I’m looking for laptop for My granddaughter. She is playing Sims. Someone said it want work
I placed and cancelled four orders for a MacBook pro going back and forth between the base model, the one with 8 GPU cores and 512gb storage, and the base model but with upgraded memory. I feel like my Windows PC barely gets by with 16gb so buying a laptop with 8 makes me nervous. I’m also a huge nerd and buying the basic version of anything takes a shot at my ego.
This video answers all the questions. Are upgrades good? Sure, absolutely. Do they make differences in benchmark apps? Sure, most of the time. From a user experience point of view, are any of those upgrades worth it for 95% of people? No, not even close.
To be you said everything when you said “I cannot tell a difference in performance between my MacBook Air (fanless) and actively cooled Mac Mini”. If the extra core and active cooling makes no difference, the any money spent on those is just a waste.
So in CDN$, instead of paying 400$ more for the 8 GPU core / 512gb storage, I bought myself 3 skins to make it looks even cooler, and nVME enclosure to transform my Decktop PC’s 1TB SDD into external storage for the MacBook Air and still save around 300$ that I can spend on family outings and applications. I can easily spend hundreds on a computer and then hesitate to buy a 3.99$ app 🙂
Idk if anyone will read this but has anyone with the new mba 8gb has had issues while streaming videos on safari etc cause whenever i have more than 3/4 tabs it shows that the tab is consuming too much energy and affecting the performance etc and it also automatically closed safari idk why this is happening and this is my first apple device, can someone help?
Excellent review and reasoning descriptions. Thanks!
This design of the Macbook Air was released in 2018. It adopted a lot of design choices from the Macbook Pro line, notably the bezels.
