I just got an iPhone 13 (replacing my iPhone 8 Plus), as did my 14 year old son. My 12 year old son opted for the SE 3Generation. I do rather like his Home button.

iPhone 12 Mini does just as good. Performs superb. It’s smaller and costs roughly the same. Definitely would choose it over this one.

Iphones frustrations

I myself have been using Android since the samsung S2, and for good reason – easy file transfers and backup

11 years on, im using an s22 ultra now, which in part has been the best tech purchase for this year

Meanwhile , the missus have been using an iphone since 5 and now 12 pro max

anyway, im sure MAC users or those whom have invested heavily into the apple eco system will (probably) not encounter such troubles.

first off

1) backups

Android phones allows you to backup your phones however you wish, either transfer to PC via USB or save to the cloud via google photos, AND GOOGLE PHOTOS WILL DELETE DUPLICATE pictures ( whatsapp, instagram etc if it detects it) and free up space on your phone. you can then transfer to your google drive etc, so on and so forth. You can even download all whatsapp media files via usb, is that simple,

Iphones however, creates this symbiotic relationship with your phone and your ICLOUD, meaning, if u delete it from your phone, you delete it from your cloud (huh?) and, when you free up space in your phone, your phone will automatically download it back from the cloud,

but when your phone is running out of space, let say to download updates etc, your only OPTION is to pay for more cloud space.

AND , when you want to download high resolution images from the cloud, surprise!, you cant one click and do it overnight, you have to select 1000 items at a time! go figure….

2) Whatsapp on android allows you to share HIGH RESOLUTION pictures and videos via ‘documents’ attachments to WHOEMEVER you wish, even iphones

but iphones only allow this via imessage or air message or whatever….

simple solution is a third party app – send anywhere…

BUT BUT

If you are an iphone user and theres a possibility that you will be sharing media files with families and friends whom are using android phones…

Be sure to change few camera settings …

and no , the settings are not under the camera app

ALL IPHONE SETTINGS is under settings, click on settings

click formats – and choose most compatible

next

click preseve setting, make sure live photo is ticked (green)

before taking any photo, be sure the top right toggle ( looks like the sun) – live photo is off,

why? cuz live photo is not supported by android , so no point sharing,

furthermore , most compatible format setting is to ensure that the high resolution format media that you would eventually share via SEND anywhere is not in HEIC format…

no worries too much , since android has free HEIC to jpeg app ( with ads of course)

3) Android allows you to create any form of folders and transfer any files to and from that folder..

no such luck with iphones

4) TRANSFERRING MEDIA files from iphones to PC

this is the bulk of my newly found frustrations lie…

i got a used iphone se 128gb simply to shoot videos BECAUSE it is the most compatible with DJI osmo mobile gimbal…. somehow DJI never bothered to update the app to be more compatible and offer more function with samsung….

I used DJI mimo app to shoot, granted you shoot in 4k 24 fps, 40fps, 60 fps etc and many more, while having full control via the gimbal to control your phone…its all fine and dandy….

trouble is ……

Transferring all those files to a windows PC, specifically windows 10.

Inside the photo gallery / camera roll … the files are named DJI2021 — basically it is named after the timing of the shoot, and arranged chronologically…..

BEFORE PLUGGIN IN , MAKE SURE YOU GO TO SETTINGS, click photos , choose transfer to mac or pc and click “keep original”

IF YOU DONT DO THIS, then the transfer process will be interrupted with no explanations!

first , you have to install itunes prior…

then, you have to plug in , click trust, and what for the DCIM folder to reappear and disappear several times….until finally itunes detect the iphone…

funnily, it prompted me to update to the latest ios ,but failed several times, USING IPHONE ORIGINAL CABLE… dumb software…

updated it instead via phone via wifi…

then, IT DOESNT MATTER WHETHER YOU transfer using

1) windows photos – import

2) or go through the DCIM folder via windows explorer

all the media file’s names will be encrypted names, therefore, YOU CANT ARRANGE IT IN ORDER…

good luck if its 100+ files… you literally have to watch each one and figure out yourself….

makes video editing a real pain!

However , theres a remedy to this, its either get a MAC ($$$) or download a third party app….. 40ringgit per year!?!?! or 120 ringgit for lifetime…..

PAID APP TO TRANSFER YOUR FILES FROM YOUR IPHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER!

you can’t really blame the developer because APPLE takes a cut from each sale of the app store….

So, there you go…

If you are ever interested in an iphone…

please be sure what you’re getting yourself into….

understand the mechanism, and settings…

However, if you, your family, colleagues, friends etc are deeply invested in the apple ecosystem, then by all means, you MAY or MAY not encounter such problems…

As for my, im enjoying my s22 ultra…

( samsung makes iphone screens btw and no….. they dont give apple their best)

The S pen helped alot as a shutter button to take photos and videos using a tripod…

we get alot more favourable results than asking strangers with different ideas to take our photos….

Super tiny screen, poor display quality and low storage. They’d have done better at $549 with a half inch bigger/better screen.
