Ever since they stopped the “S” lines, people complain about no design changes. The designs usually change every 2 years, let’s stop talking about it being “the same design”.

Mostly, but I’d argue the list of importance (in terms of hardware) goes display then battery in close 2nd then general build quality, water resistance, cameras and lastly speakers.

Sure, the display is a bit brighter, but 60Hz is pretty insulting in late 2021 and even worse heading into 2022 and that notch is so wildly unecessary these days AND it’s even taller (sure, a bit narrower but that hasn’t achieved anything at all). FaceID is nice, but we’ve had under-display fingerprint readers for a long time now and they’re fast, reliable and effective. If Apple wasn’t sure, they’ve already got lock buttons with integrated sensors they could have used but I suspect they don’t want to move away from FaceID unless they can either combine it with fingerprint or wait until they can frame it as ‘under display scanners are now at our high level of quality’ rather than ‘we went the wrong path with face scanning, sorry’.

Lightning ports can fuck off at this point. It’s a great physical connector, especially before USB-C, but it’s a limiting factor for charge speed and if you’re into the Apple stuff you probably already have at least one USB-C charger. I can charge my phone, Switch, watch, headphones, earbus and mouse all on a single, tiny, 65W GaN charger. Oh and my IPAD AS WELL. Just a weird hangover imo, I’d actually be perfectly happy going fully portless at this point.

Personally, I’ve been wanting to move back to an iPhone for ages now (last one was a 6s+) because I’m frustrated with the availability of good Android phones in my country (no OnePlus, no Pixel, basically just Huawei, Oppo or Samsung and I really can’t go back to OneUI). Apple has the better software UX in 90% of situations but their devices are super stagnant, they kept the 6 design around for years and have stayed with basically the X ever since, and that’s the reason I moved away back then. Get that refresh rate up, kill the notch and sort the charging and I’d be on board.

Whether on iOS or Android, we’ve all been buying the same thing over and over for the past 4 years. The only differences comes from the minor improvements with display, camera, and sometimes battery life.
