It’s pedantic but the car analogy doesn’t really work. Typically cars have a 5-10 year long model cycle with a mid-cycle refresh halfway through. All the in-between years typically have no changes (seriously, none) aside from the model year increasing by 1. I know Tesla makes running changes year to year or even in the middle of a model year sometimes but that’s extremely atypical in the industry.

I suppose we’re now finding ways to justify mediocre upgrades for continuously higher prices? I mean, like yeah you *could* make the comparison to cars, but a model year car is often a +$30k purchase/investment/financing agreement, while a phone is 1/30th of that price, although apple is seemingly trying to close that gap year after year. I know anecdotal evidence is not valid evidence, but for the sake of the argument, when discussing your average consumer, even my own brother has already chosen to buy this new iphone once they are available. Guess what he has, an iphone 12. I think its a plus version as well. Go on any university campus, and take note of what phones they have, they probably have the newest or atleast second newest iphone.
The analogy to cars is a pretty bizarre comparison, but I guess since we are discussing apple, a company that still lobbies against bills preventing the use of forced human labor in China, then all bets are off. But I won’t be a hypocrite, I will admit I myself have an iphone, I think they work mostly well. Except I have an iphone 7 that I bought last year for less than 180 bucks off ebay. And apparently it comes from the chinese market itself, not the american version. I don’t plan on giving apple my money directly any time soon, least of which to a +$1000 device that will do practically everything the same as my previous iphone 5s will do, maybe slightly faster. No, camera upgrades do not justify that price tag. So since my iphone was already in the hands of someone else, lets face it, it was already made, theres no unmaking the thing. Does that make me guilty as well too? Perhaps, but I limit my contribution to the pile, and I even plan to replace the battery myself to avoid giving apple any money they don’t need. In a few years when planned obsolescence has killed my phone, maybe I’ll decide to buy another. Straight off ebay. Just my two cents.
