It’s a Muscle Car for those who want a chromed-up show piece. Nothing wrong with that. At least Apple has the decency to offer tiny box (Studio) version.
Fun fact: It is the only officially ssd upgrade able Mac, but with PCI you need only a nvme raid card to expand the storage! 😂 But for a sound engineer a PCI expand case could be enough. For large ML models memory is more important than storage, i don’t really know which people need this Mac Pro except some large movie production’s. Internal ssd cards could save a lot of time and money.
1000$ for a 2TB Nvme SSD thats Way too expensive when 8TB Sabrent rocket is 1000$. Smaller size of apple ssd maybe causing this but the macpro has plenty of space if they put the M.2 slot tilted 90* to the left. That area used to be filled with 4 ddr4 RAM slots and cant even fit a m.2 slot properly get out of there apple we know you are doing it intentionally. And why no gpu support arm can support external gpus and apple doesnt have the power to design softwere and hardware for it is crazy. and i dont understand why the PCIE slots doesnt support ssds or carrier cards. i think effectively mac studio can do everything it can (Thunderbolt could be used in place of usb for basically everything the physical slots in macpro could be used to)
Yeah. Delays with the 3nm process, Covid, supply chain, Russia attacking Ukraine, tensions with China over Taiwan, etc, ad nauseam pushed Apple to finish the M2 Ultra for this test box that costs them nothing to re-engineer. The Studio is a solid enough performer that they’ll happily eat the criticism from those who buy this pig to inform them on how to engineer the next revision. Kinda crass, but Apple’s always been quiet until they choose otherwise. I’m betting the M3 Pro will be different and I’m guessing they’re also working on bespoke RAM.
Mark my words, Apple’s going all in-house. Likely by 2030 at the latest. If we all survive, that is 🙂
This will still sell enough thanks to institutional sales, especially in university labs where the Mac Studio would be easier to steal and where the PCIe slots will likely find some use. After all, the 2019 MP was still selling surprisingly well recently and outselling the M1 Mac Studio(!), most likely thanks to institutional purchase orders. As others have pointed out elsewhere, Apple released this as a stopgap measure intended on meeting the needs of professionals who are still, for the time being, making use of software in Apple’s ecosystem but who need more low-latency internal connectivity for expansion cards.
So, certainly a dumb purchase for the “prosumer,” but not so much for the high-end digital art/music studio and the university. And now the rest of us has a perfectly-good, much lower cost option in the M2 Mac Studio. (And, let’s face it, a good chuck of power users could get by just fine with an M2 Max Mac Studio, let alone the Ultra model.)
Not being able to use powerful video cards in the PCIe slots or RAID cards makes it a hard sell to enterprise customers.
Make sure you let us know when you return it.
I love seeing the old Pro and the New 2.0 Pro side by side. All but one of the drives have been repurposed. I still have a 5,1 collecting dust in a corner and am now rocking a M1 Mac Mini. Time marches on.
Test out if you can use pcie-SSD expansion cards instead of the overpriced ssd upgrade solution from Apple. But at that point you could just get an external ssd for the Mac Studio for a fraction of the price.
I would like to see how the Ultra Mac Pro would fair against a Intel Xeon W-3400 paired with a RTX 4090 or RTX 6000. I suspect the price-to-performance ratio of the Intel based machine would be crushing and the raw performance significantly better as well. The reality is Apple Silicon is without equal in portable computing. And, it works really well for video editors (because of the architecture of Apple silicon). But, for other professional work flows, you’re simply going to get better performance from an Intel and/or AMD system today, and it’s not really close.
I”m not an Apple fan, but I love watching your vids, but after seeing this I”m back to questioning perceptions. When are Mac users going to revolt and tell Apple to stop treating them like ATMs and give them some respect. The way that company is giving itself complete control over your experience and offering more interesting options only at a high price is such corporate greed I want to scream. This company isn’t the inovator it was anymore… its a hustle, and the customer as usual,is the rube.
I coudl see this making sense if Apple had a great support for AMD and Nvidia GPUs but as is you can maybe throw a few supported AMD GPUs in it at best and if I’m not mistaken they are all a few generations old at this point so the GPU built into the main soc is probably as fast if not faster plus it also benefits from having unified memory making aftermarket GPU upgrades pointless. I’m really not sure why Apple made this. Maybe it’s so we could possibly have aftermarket Apple hardware but even then only a few people would actually buy this.
8:17 labelling oopsie
I am working in a sound studio we have Mac Studio and are limited by expandiblity
I’m disappointed to see that the idea of upgrade path is being phased out for “we know whats best for you”
as a not super tech guy, what are like things that can actually go in PCIe slots? (Ik abt GPU cards or smth like that but i also k that mac pro doesnt accept it)
Spent $8k just to call a kettle black lmao.
That sheep comment might be one of the least self-aware comments I’ve heard. He’s got a playlist named “MacBook Videos” with 255 videos. He named his podcast “dark mode”. His ratio of apples eaten to # of times saying the word apple starts with a decimal point followed by a whole lot of zeroes. I’m not 100% on the last one but I’m ok with the assumption.
Anytime he says the phrase “apple sheep”, it’d better be accompanied with words like “we”, “my fellow”, or “myself included” hahaha
If you need this you know who you are. For almost all the rest of us there are other macs.
NO just no you are correct get the studio
Nice video
