did you test the disk speed? that might explain the difference in export/render times
they should put the mac studio in the trash can instead. it’s a much sexier design
So it seems that the variations in the silicon is giving different benchmark results?
Luke, i couldn’t agree more, this is the best round up of the Mac Pro i’ve seen so far, the most honest one too i have to say. But most importantly (and i will toot my own horn here) it only proves i made the right choice in getting the Studio Ultra. In many ways Apple just made too good of a machine when releasing the Studio line up and it doesn’t seem like they have built a Mac Pro worthy of the M-1/M-2 chip, like you said they have adapted it inside a chassis that was designed for an older (Intel like) system. Nice design and nice cool cardboard box, but that’s about all it has going for it, at least at the moment in this present iteration…
You couldn’t have said it better.
If you have the paid workflow that can use this thing, then it is not dumb, then it is a production beast. But if you have no idea about the high end animation, video, tv, audio, industrial world then you would think this is dumb.
Apple is deserving of the title: “Worlds greatest scam artists.”
Yes you are
How many times do we have to educate fuckwits like you, Luke? IT’S NOT A $3000 DIFFERENCE IN PRICE!!! Many many many professionals have heaps of Thunderbolt 3 enclosures for their required PCI-e cards. Those enclosures are expensive; I have $2000 worth of them hooked up to my Ultra Studio right this second. Two 5K displays suck up 2x TB4 ports. That leaves only 4 ports available and the requirement to daisy-chain enclosures and peripherals. That means shared bandwidth for each port. That means NVME storage slabs running at 50% speed due to Thunderbolt’s bandwidth constraints. And you cannot properly RAID NVMEs with enclosures. RAID-on-a-card will work properly inside the M2 Pro.
You are right that this doesn’t need to exist…. this is pointless… you can do exactly the same and more upgrades with PC …
You could probably use a dedicated GPU in Asahi Linux
So your point is that a smaller and less expandable Mac Pro with no PCIE slots would be better?
Not dumb if they allow amd new cards and the ultimate if they allow nvidia cards for the pci..the nvidia cards destroys all videos cards …..period
Looks like this will be geting returned.
Great video. Thanks. I’m still using a 2012, 5,1 Mac Pro as my main machine. 64 Gb RAM, 4 x 2Tb internal SSD’s, two 30″ Cinema Display. I’d continue to use it but the software is falling behind. The M2 Ultra Mac Pro would fit the bill if it was expandable like the 5,1… I’ll probably end up with the maxed out Mac Studio Ultra with a couple of monitors and two or three external SSD’s. Pity. Apple’s only thinking about the shareholders now, not the users.
I would love a Mac-Pro case that could be used with Windows/Other motherboards etc.
Imagine an RTX 4090/4080 Gaming PC inside this simple yet really nice looking case. No RGB, No crazy design, just simple and works.
This chassis will come into its own with M chip expansion cards etc. It’s a platform that will be built on… Memory is what it is, it was never possible to do RAM expansion with Apple silicon because of how it’s integrated for high speed.
