Despite the fact there’s a lot of cheaper Thunderbolt expansion systems, the cost of the Mac Pro Tower, much less the Rack Mount version, costs more than a Sonnet xMac Studio with an Echo III with 3 PCIe slots in a rack mount case at 1,549 + the cost of the M2 Ultra Mac Studio. The cost of an additional Duo Modo Rack with another Echo III for the full 6 PCIe slots the Mac Pro comes with is another 1,200 still and even both of those are cheaper than just the Mac Pro on it’s own and offer an additional slot where you could take it up to 9 PCIe Slots via Thunderbolt at a later date for another 1,000 with a third Echo III. It’s as if they made the Mac Pro for niche video editing and an ever shrinking audio market that’s got plenty of Thunderbolt alternatives to PCIe cards to choose from already.
Youtubers clearly make far too much money to then waste.
To be honest I’m confused on why you keep buying something you technically don’t need.
It’s great you can just waste money on these over priced cheese graters.. this kind of content is getting boring.
As a professional designer/developer I just don’t get why people who don’t use the full power of these machines continue to pretend it’s necessary..
Well Luke, the internal storage is still massively upgradeable, just like on the 2019 mac pro, and of course the earlier ones too. I have a 2019 with 8TB of sata SSD and a 2 TB apple SSD. But of course you can add Pcie cards of storage as well. Thats a bit better than hanging externals off the ports, especially if you need alot of storage for media and other files, but dont want to go the NAS route.
Mac Pro tower 2023 was designed to follow the failed trashcan mac. it wasn’t made for the average professional, let alone prosumers. Those in the music industry with 200+ GB Vienna Ensemble templates are crying. This machine is waiting for a M-chip with more RAM which better arrive by the end of 2023. Studio One has been ahead of Logic Pro by years for nearly a decade, another insult. Many of us in the music industry switched away from Apple seven years ago, tied of waiting. Thank God we did.
I presume that you need a designed for a MacPro PCIE card – well for the kernel modules anyway – or will native Intel kernel modules run under rosseta?
The Mac Studio should have been an Apple silicon Trash Can Mac, love that design and it would have been perfect
If we said apple is selling a bag of nails for $500 you’d say I’ll buy it
I would have no use for the new mac pro, since i literally just bought the new mac mini a few months ago.
*Apple will kill entire Mac studio lineup right now.*
You are left with an Apple idiot-box, cooling nonexisting components. 😂
Seems like Apple had grand plans then had to punt for some reason and released this as their backup plan. Will be useful for true professionals who need the I/O of the pcie slots but to no one else. Underwhelming to say the least! Great review!
I thought it was a cheese grater
At least you know that. The majority of Mac users are very defensive about a purchase they make 😅
So what is Cinebench R23 scores?
I don’t think there’s any Apple fan that thinks this is great for the price.
Things are change dramatically, this has a very narrow niche. I want to see the add on cards available.
“…It’s not just that Apple priced it wrong, it’s that this entire chassis has been designed for a product that isn’t inside of it…”
That’s so accurate it’s kind of scary. This is basically an expensive enclosure to reuse expensive modules that are not compatible with the Mac Studio.
Excellent review, simply excellent 👏👏👏👏👏
Hate to say it because they are really cool and the performance is incredible, but it is a completely waste of money product when compared to the Mac Studio. Though I’ll go even a step further, I think it might be time for Apple to retire the entirety of their desktop solutions and switch completely to the MacBook. None of their desktop solutions are actually upgradable anymore which really ruins the one advantage these machines had with the exception of thermals which I would argue has been fixed with Apple Silicon.
Before it was a trade off, you get upgradability and better thermals in exchange for any portability. Now those two trade offs are gone. If you want a Mac, your best bet is a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro in my opinion anyway. I think Apple knows this and I think they’re slowly killing their desktop product line on purpose.
I find this and other videos like it so disappointing. I own a 2010 Mac Pro. It runs my sound studio software, the core of which is ProTools HDX. It depends on two HDX cards and a proprietary card that runs UAD plugins. Apple, in their usual inconceivable ignorance, after huge waits, produced not one but TWO generations of utterly useless MacPros (the “trash can” and the iMac lookalike). FINALLY, they returned to THIS form factor to the gigantic relief of users who don’t want to deal with the wasted space and other issues of the various expansion chassis options. About the time I’d saved up to buy one, rumors of a totally new generation started circulating and I decided to wait so as not to buy something that would become instantly obsolete, And sure enough, out came Apple Silicon which was extremely well received in the audio community. The system-on-a-chip approach is well suited to that application. So the wait began again and now, FINALLY, a PCIe Gen 4 Apple Silicon based MacPro ! I couldn’t care less that the PCIe backplane doesn’t have independent data paths, my cards will almost never hit them simultaneously anyway. I’m DEFINITELY buying this one. And my biggest fear is that videos like these will CONVINCE Apple – already the stupidest company on Earth besides microsoft – to NOT keep making computers in this form factor so I have something to which I can eventually upgrade. Most of the things complained about in this video make absolutely zero sense for users with heavy hitter PCIe cards, which OBVIOUSLY, is the targeted use-case for this machine ! If you aren’t reviewing it from that perspective, your review is nonsense. It’s like complaining that a refrigerator is a lousy toaster. Come on, seriously !?!??!
