You know, i agree with you. There are many things i could say about it. But it does depend on case by case. Let’s make that clear.

I think there are about 2 markets for this Mac Pro, at least, for the Apple Silicon one. You have the music producers who will load this up with audio cards indeed. But those audio cards most-likely will be AVID cards, which uhm, cost A LOT of money as well. All that while you can buy Logic Pro for €200 (or something like that.) I do still connect my synths through my computer though. But all those great synths like a Virus TI 2 haven’t been upgraded to a TI3 for example. We are moving into a completely different world when it comes to computing. This might be the end all together. At least when it comes to Apple computers. And what i mean by that is the options we have in upgradeability. RAM & storage will be fixed (and very high priced.)

anyway, i could go on but i want to talk about the other group and that’s of course the people who might want to run some sort of server or even a glorified media computer with a lot of storage, to have fast access to their library.

Again, i could say a lot more about this, but it really depends what Apple will do next right now as well. They could’ve made some kind of beast Apple Silicon CPU with tons of options for storage, RAM & GPU options. Of course, i don’t think we’ll ever see that again.

RE cooling temps; The M2 Ultra Studio has a larger all-copper heatsink whereas the Mac Pro’s is an aluminium fin stack connected via a heat pipe. Yes the Studio has two fans, but the capacity of those also takes into account the heat that is drawn from the underside of the logic board, including the power supply. The Mac Pro fan is cooling only the SoC, so the heatsink is likely the cause in the different temps.

I have the trash can macs and they work beautifully! I upgraded the memory to 128Gig and they have 2 E5 Intel cpus a total of 12 cores. I can honestly say this… I truely feel that this new mac pro is a useless computer. The mac studio has everything I would ever need and I’m a audio engineer. The only thing I would really want is a few things, the ability to upgrade the Cpus, Memory and SSD storage which today you can’t do. I Think this computer is a real FLOP! Personally Apple could’ve made this machine great by allowing the ability to upgrade the machine with Cpus, memory and SSD storage but only this machine. Then I would’ve justified the cost difference. Luke you are 100% right. If Apple doesn’t wan’t to do anything unique to this machine, then they should just discontinue it!

Only way this made sense, at that price point is if it had the rumored M2 Extreme chip in it—but from what I’ve heard the cost and yields on that weren’t great and it was hard to justify.

Even then, it becomes an issue of “why not just put the extreme in the studio?”

id love to see people sell the case of the new one and mod a 2012Macpro into a 2019MacproCase

tho im thinking maybe getting an intel 2019macpro and going back to windows due to the fact i like a PC that i can upgrade FULLY With 100PERCENT CONTROL.

I love the look of the new and 2019 Mac Pro, but do not like the expandability! Right now I would rather have a 2012 Mac Pro, except that it has intel inside. I still love my Quad Core Mac G5!

I have to say, this is one of your best review yet, but ouch ! I have, and am using a 2009 Mac Pro, but not using MacOS. Debian runs great on the earlier Mac Pro.

I am not one that could use this Mac Pro configuration. However I believe there are use cases that can use it. I believe Apple created this M2 ultra device as is because they had to. They did not want to delay the complete transition to Apple silicon any longer. I believe they will go back to the drawing board and design something that puts it back on top.

When it comes to the ever so slight difference in thermals, and CPU performance, I wonder if they gave the Mac Pro a slightly higher clock speed on the CPU vs the mac studio.

As far as I am concerned Apple has lost their way with what really the largest portion of the consumer wants or needs! I have had nothing but Apple for over 30 years and I have never been so frustrated and put-out with Apple.

I have a 2007 Mac Pro 2.66ghz 1,1 sitting in my office that appears to be beafier and full than this over priced junk of aluminum that will probably be abandoned in less than 2 years!

Some will find this design perfect for their needs. Those PCIE slots allow modifications that thunderbolt can’t accommodate. It allows custom cards for custom applications. There are more uses for these machines than sound and graphics and there are companies that will prefer a Mac Pro over a custom PC. It may not be for you, but it can be perfect for others.

I think this is the most disappointing Apple product … but, I could in fact make use of the PCIe slots.

Before I tell you how I could use it… and even though I wanted Apple to keep this case, as it stands it’s a horrible value and I promise not to buy one.

I mean the number one thing I’d slot in immediately is a NVMe card, like the Accelsior 4M2.

I used to have broadcast video I/O and sound cards. I … don’t have those anymore … replacing them with Thunderbolt equivalents, but the PCIe versions are faster.

So… it’s not useless.

But it’s such a waste of space.

I have so many smarter ways to use that chassis and drive the future of computing.
