You can still add PCI-e Storage, using those PCI express M.2 boards. some are super awesome and can hold a ton of M.2 drives.
but its clear that the “mac pro” is the mac studio, but for those who need PCI-E expansion cards, for whatever reason.
if you dont, get the studio.
maybe some studios have been working on some pci-e expansion cards specifically for this… its not completely unlikely

Honestly for the price it’s insulting, if insane. I think it was rushed just so they could say they’ve completed the transition. There’s the slots and storage upgrade potential but then it’s hindered by whatever you order with for it’s whole life and that’s really the down fall here. I predict it won’t sell well because of it and I don’t like making predictions. If you’re spending 8k on a computer chances are you know what you’re buying and that’s the problem here. Sure high end studios might buy this for things like movie production but unless they really need the extra slots, the far better value I imagine most pros will buy is the studio. That few seconds savings ain’t for most of us.

That M1 Ultra is extremely underwhelming for a desktop lol. Only 28k in Cinebench, while consumer grade CPUs like 13900k/7950x score 40k. Comparable Epyc chips will destroy this as well.

The slightly better CPU performance is due to binning. Apple is using better binned chips for Mac Pro.

I think the only benefit to the mac pro is if you have some sort of special use case to utilize all the expansion slots maxed out with wicked fast ssd for some reason. The other reason is that this is a stepping stone to arm based expandable computer systems.

For the last few decades, IMHO, Apple only produce the highest-end Mac Pros for a few reasons; their own use, for the very few that need them, and as a flagship PR product. Of course, I missed out the idiots on Youtube that buy them for clickbait as they criticize them and fail to grasp the real reasons they exist.

I agree that more upgradablity would have been nice but this machine is far from pointless. Compared to the Mac Studio:

* More ports
* Upgradable internal storage
* PCI slots
* Can be put on the floor, leaving more room on desk
* Looks cool as hell
