Honestly, if it had AV1 support, I’d find a way to get one. I don’t NEED kidneys, right? Oh well, hopefully we’ll get an M3 with AV1 encode/decode soon.
9:30 the older 80 pound Mac Pro was a good machine. The god.
makes no sense. indeed.
ITS LIKE A exoitic car people need to know i have money lol
hmm another dumb idea,
put 02 x mac-mini, in those empty space,
effectively quadrupling the performace, on technicality wise , though you might have to get creative in how to get the power cables and display out.
since the keyboard and mouse can be done wirelessly , via bluetooth, figured it might be cool to create a meme,
mac pro tower with 02 mac-mini within, and outputting to X number of 8k 32inch monitors
for the lulz
Youtubers think that they are the top users on those but they are not. This is why the web is now full of videos on how people should go buy the studio instead.
Large corpos that run on Mac use them. This thing is meant to be used as a server/workstation. Connected to SAN , thats why it doesnt have large onboard storage -it doesnt need it.
I’ve seen qute a few of the intel model on our clients (we provide storage solutions). I’ve seen them connected with fiber cards to servers. I’ve even seen 1 Rack Pro max config connected to NVME SAN via RDMa (that was buggy as hell as Apple’s drivers for HBAs are horrific).
This is what this is about. Those PCI ports are for HBAs, capture cards or even GPUs (if the chip can handle it).
The iGPU in M2 U is good but its no way near as strong as Quardo. The guys using those machines are doing 3D modeling , CGI work, sound recording and movie edditing (cinema stuff , not youtube).
You’ve already unpacked it, dude It’s obvious
I’m curious on what exactly and how many things you can plug in those PCIe slots?
What will happen if you plug in any graphics card? :V
maybe 100GB networking … provisioning for nvme 4 & 5 raid cards ..
well, if have bunch cards put in there, those need cooling.
Pro’s asked for modularity, with CPU’s and GPU’s being installed on daughter boards for upgradeability and flexibility. Got a computer that, aside from the PCIE slots, is as upgradeable as any laptop Apple has released in the last 5 years. Note only that, they increased the price by $1000. I thought Apple Silicon was going to make things cheaper? What an absolute joke.
People that need expansion cards, like audio engineers and data centers will mostly likely use this. Not the studio. If they did launch just a new “mac trash can” version people would start to complain again… This is the true Pro form factor bc it has the industry standard slots.
You are right Luke, the Mac Pro is useless really and has no place in the market. Please let me know when you want my mailing address and I’ll take it off you and put it in storage here.
4 apple GPU 128
Anyone know what version the HDMI’s are?
My thoughts on this is that Apple will realize that non intergraded RAM and GPU need to be supported… but just like it took them 6 years between the trash can and the cheese grater 2.0, it might take some time
They even said it in their keynote, this product is for the likes of CNN and Disney, for the ones who do live shows. Its advantage is that you can have all your TV studio in one box and have 2 or 3 for redundancy. You can even use it in mobile broadcasting studios, and you no longer need to carry that much gear in your car. It saves a lot of setup time, because all the gear is on board. And it is 5 times cheaper than the old one with the same performance. But, maybe they’re gonna put out some other expansion cards for other users in the near future, who knows? Anyway, for developers, film and photo editors (tasks which do not require processing on the machine in real time, like live TV and video streaming at the standards of CNN, with live overlays and whatnot), there are cloud services you can use to get extra processing power when you need it so if you don’t need the audio/video capture cards, you’d better buy the Mac Studio if you buy it only for the M2 Ultra.
they want to be the sole provider of whatever addon cards people need to keep this as closed source as possible, but as usual, real pro market with its demand for customizability and modularity tend to be more fickle to apple, and so there will be fights between our demands and their solutions, until they finally realize that this isn’t their lucrative market, then they would silently bury this line of product behind some poppy pop lifestyle products
It’s only dumb if you don’t have good use cases for the PCI-e slots. I for one think it’s dumb to hang 24TB of PCIe-4 spec m.2 off a TB connection, not to mention ungainly. Definitely wish AAPL had done more to differentiate the Pro from Studio, and hope to see so in a future release — if need gobs of mem, will need to hang onto Intel ver or switch to windows. But Studio buyers poking a how dumb the Pro is, is more confirmation bias than anything else afaic. If you need (or want the slots) then no other option, and chances are, biz expense anyway.
That old G5 gen Mac Pros were awesome.
