I guess we will get a new Mac Pro with every new M-Ultra chip until they find a way to make it even more ridiculously powerful. The need to upgrade is not there anymore if there is a new, much stronger machine, every few years instead of every 4-6 years where it made sense to upgrade.
dang that box is huge…. Luke has so many macs please help me out…I need a new macbook
I love the drama when you slammed the mac studio on the desk and the pan / reframing. Your channel is my go to for “no BS” mac info. Thanks Luke!
Apple has officially given up on the pro audio market, which relies on massive ram over gpu usage. 1tb of ram is good, but 192gb of ram is nowhere near what’s needed for modern pro audio studios.
No open standards upgradable RAM and SSD are HUGE let downs.
I’ll buy it from you for $1500 ! DM me.
As an 3d artist I work with maya and Arnold, if it is possible for you please test that too, because its industry standard and all 3d artists would appreciate it
The exterior is beautiful, but not sure the insides fully make sense (other than for great thermals.)PS The nature of Apple Silicon had no upgradability even for gpu. That was known from the outset.
But Luke, you can charge up to seven iPhones with Apple’s soon-to-be announced $1400 MacPro-iPhone Magic Charger Kit! Of course you’ll have to buy seven iPhone 15 Ultra-Maxi-Pro phones when they are available.
That’s COURAGE for you! /s
Yea you pretty much nailed it. Only thing worth mentioning that I’ve noticed almost nobody is talking about is that you don’t even need the PCIe slots inside this machine unless you require ultra fast NVMEs with 10,000 MB/s read/write. The external Thunderbolt 3 PCI chassis you can buy and connect to a Mac Studio are fast enough for just about everything else, rendering this machine even more pointless. And that’s coming from an owner of a Mac Pro 4,1 for 14 years.
The idiocy of a guy standing next to a machine with a bunch of PCI slots and saying it has no expansion (or even less than the ashtray Mac Pro).
I think it’s intentional that they made such a not upgradeable Mac Pro.
Apple doesn’t care about user upgrade ability and know that they make more money selling more new units vs selling a unit and someone else pocketing the profit on upgrades and keeping the machine.
They make the Mac Studio that performs equal to the Pro, and for cheaper, “who cares about user upgrade?! These things rock!” As the Mac Pro doesn’t sell, then Apple has all the reason they need to stop sale on it and effectively kill off ALL user control over hardware. Their mission of total control over their hardware will be complete. Anytime you want to upgrade, you NEED to pay their exorbitant upgrade prices at checkout, or buy a new machine if you made the mistake of not upgrading on the front end.
Great video Luke! I do believe that the Mac Pro will be available with proprietary GPUs made by Apple. Pros will be able to choose if they need absolutely huge graphics power or if… umm, already kind of huge graphics power is enough. I also believe that Apple is still working on the whole “M2 Extreme” or “X1” chip idea, but I think the M2 chip isn’t ready for that and, if it does come to fruition, it will be in the M3 series. I’ve also heard that Apple is working on expandable RAM, which isn’t ready currently because it’s as slow as the RAM on x86 systems. But when they have mastered the concept, we’ll have unified RAM that can be removed and upgraded with higher levels, rather than being soldered to the chip.
This is such a great video, mainly because it supports an argument that Apple has real contempt for some of its customers and it will needlessly churn out tech that will date quickly and become useless. If I had paid 50 grand for an Apple Pro Desktop only to then discover six months later it was being written off, I’d demand a refund or a huge discount on the next pro desktop Apple computer, even more so if as a result it adversely affects my business. I find it truly shocking that a corporate organisation can treat its customers with such sheer and utter disdain. I’d love to hear the sales pitch over the phone from Apple about the new Desktop Mac Pro computer, the skilled half sentences and what is not said or not even known could constitute the composition of an effective con mans bible.
I see an eBay auction in this Mac Pro’s future.
The REAL Mac Pro will come out next year with the M3… with compute modules that will have Apple silicon chips with 2x to 4x GPU and Media Engine on chip (and dedicated memory per module)
Its running a variant of iOS to manage the chip/board and to communicate with main system and not tax it. Maybe MacOS can’t manage multi-chip systems effectively past the Ultra spec.
The original cheese grater is the best Mac they ever made IMHO.
Just adding to the algorithm to help you afford this insanity
Yeah, I could make use of this with the PCI slots for audio cards… but I would never spend that sort of money when a Mac Studio can do the same with USB C audio solutions. This truly is a waste of money
I think this product only exists for large companies with massive server rooms, which are few and far between nowadays.
