I need to say: “Luke, you are crazy!” xD
“Built it and they’ll come” I am sure that exapasion cards will popup, but nobody will make cards for a machiine that doesn’t exist.
just wait for the M2 PCI expansion cards from Apple
Isnt there thunderbolt pcie enclosures? Get a max out mac studio and a few pcie enclosurr, u probably still have some changes
Needs more POV
Never underestimate Apple’s capacity to take your money! You will most probably spend another 10k for an M4 extreme GPU in 2025 and put it in one of the empty PCI slots, regardless of the bandwidth limit…
When the Mac pro first came out in 2006, it started around $2000 just like the Mac Studio and it was possible for regular consumers who needed a lot of power to buy it. Even the trashcan would show up in businesses or schools or self-employed content creators setups. now it’s clear based on form factor and price that the max studio is the computer that really replaces the old Mac pros and the Mac pro pretty much is just for people with very specific expansion needs almost no one who would’ve bought a Mac pro in say 2010 should buy a Mac Pro now and instead should buy a Mac Studio. It’s kind of weird that they did this naming thing this way, because the Mac Pro really doesn’t function like the Macpro used to.
I don’t like where the Mac Pro is right now and I’m not rushing out to buy one. I have 3 Thunderbolt hubs for 2 Macs now and it’s becoming a wire-y mess, so PCI cards do have a value, but unless there’s performance upgrades possible it’s not a $3000 value. I don’t think that this is the end of the line for the Mac Pro, maybe not even this version of it. Hopefully those PCI slots are put to better use at some point. It’s not useless but it’s just disappointing. Hopefully the next Mac Probis benchmarked against this and delivers a more impressive result
Ok..if this upset you so much, I will take it but just because we are friends…thank you
But you can install a couple of SATA drives! What about PCIe to M.2 NVMe adapter card?
‘This was a device that was designed for Apple Silicon’ isn’t the Studio just an extended mini, a chassis that is largely unchanged since 2012?
I agree that’s a stupid product.
For $700 you can upgrade the Mac Pro into a scooter…you can’t do that with a Mac Studio, it’s too small…
I’m just going to post this again here. APPLE SILICON CAN USE THE SSD AS RAM. I wonder could that be why they are upgradable and in the RAM slots hmmm. So you go from 1.5TB max to 7ish TB max. Also Apple managed to get the scaling in the graphics department and can now use both neural engines simultaneously which was not the case in the M! family. This MAC Pro is now truly a pro machine which as Apple pointed out, has the main benefit is the PCI slots. I suspect most professional studious will be configure once and use, making upgradability irrelevant.
they shouldve kept the MacPro X86
8 grands and can’t even play the latest CoD.
I might have specified it for the post-production facility I ran (where I bought Classic Mac Pros). Avid probably has a daughtercard right now for the 2023 Mac Pro. I know that ATTO has a Fibre Channel card for it. Then there is this: There is this thing in the software that says processor module and the animation I saw at the WWDC showed the CPU animating into the box. So when Apple comes up with the M3 3nm SOC, one may be able to upgrade this one. And we will not know that until Apple releases the M3. This system also comes in a 19” EIA rack mount version, which is what I would specify for a facility. We put rack-mounted Macs in closets with refrigeration-style cooling that, together with the internal fans, would keep the CPU below 40 Celsius. All other cards would be equal.
You are right: There is a small percentage of users who need this system. But I have been one of those who would specify it.
I’m curious. Did you buy this to return it? You knew ahead of time of the limitations. Or do you actually plan on using the PCI slots?
Latest Intel Mac Pro was the same con as the Powermac G5 Quad.
Supported for 3 years (at best) then apple gave you the “higher than thou” middle finger.
I’m hoping my 2019 doesn’t have to soldier on as long as my 2009 one did, but it’s not looking promising.
Can you put the M2 Ultra in the old cheese grater? That would be pointless but fun to see.
