The best MacBook to buy now is M1 MacBook Air or the base model 14 inch MacBook Pro at least in my view, they are the most value for money laptops.

The M1 macs are still a bargain, especially now that the M2 is out. For 99% of people there’s no reason to get the M2, it’s just overkill. Spend half as much and get a comparable machine, instead.

The problem is price of m1 512gig and m2 512 gig are not far apart in my region and they are equally pricey so I wonder if the solution applies.

In the UK the base M2 Air is £1250, which is $1500.
And then when you add 16bg of RAM and 500GB of storage (which really should be the bare fucking minimum for a laptop at this price) if comes to £1650, which is $2,000.
It’s really hard to recommend a $2,000 laptop where you can’t upgrade the storage and the ram in a few years when it inevitably becomes outdated.

Why does nobody ever mention how 8 GBs of ram is straight up absurd in a $1200 machine? I have the M1 air with 16 GBs, my ram usage is rarely BELOW 10 GBs. (Right now it’s 10.6 GB with Safari open and spotify, imessage and discord in the background)

People using Macs have a very good understanding what they are going to use it for and have no aspiration of getting more out of what they paid.

8GB/512GB for $1400 is way overpriced and impossible to upgrade means you cannot start to demand more out of your Macs but most Macs users don’t change.

The slower SSD makes both the base model AND opting only for the Ram upgrade less interesting.

Sooner or later the slower SSD will be a bottleneck.

last year at best buy i got a base model m1 air for $800 with student discount. im extremely attracted to the new design and upgrades the m2 macbook air brings, and impulsively wanted one, but i think in a couple of years i’ll just get a macbook pro. i do love the air like though because the battery life is more than good enough and the lighter weight is important to me
