I will still recommend the Macbook Air M1 to students and those on a budget. For the $899 price (student price and always discounted to this on Amazon now), it is a no brainer compared to any windows laptop in the price range for everyday use. It has insane battery life, is always cool to the touch, has a great keyboard (I prefer the wedge shape), decent webcam, best trackpad in the industry, and unlike all those windows laptops it doesn’t lose performance when its not plugged into the wall. The M2 is not much of an upgrade over the M1 in a lot of ways and in some ways it is a downgrade so I cannot justify having someone on a budget pay extra for it.

Apple’s laptops also have much, much better QC than a lot of other manufacturers and they have a standard 1 year warranty where if anything goes wrong with the laptop and it wasn’t your fault, they will fix it for free. There are a ton of things that I don’t like about Apple but their apple silicon laptops are top notch (no pun intended) and it’s hard to recommend anything else unless you are wanting to game or need a windows specific application that can’t work through a VM.

It’s curious that you missed out on talking about the AMD 6800u or its power usage. Even in your own graphs, the 5800u is nearly meeting the M2 chip.

This is a great machine, but as you said in this review, the 14″ M1 Pro is only 300 USD more (16GB RAM, 512 SSD), it gives SO much more power for the money. The cooling solution is extremely good (and also completely silent at almost any task), screen is a larger XDR, twice as bright and has WAY better resolution and also support dynamic 120hz, chipset has much higher memory bandwidth, speakers are just SO much better but of course weight is a bit higher. With the lacking cooling pads and throttling issues, I personally would not even consider the M2 MBA. Having a chipset reach 110 degrees seems unreal.

First: your videos are great and I do love the head-on honesty you have in your reviews. I work with audio a lot, keep noticing that you really could gain a lot using sound proofing in parts of your recording studio. You have such a clear and good voice, this is partly ruined by your recording environment. A good Sennheizer clip-on or a SM7B would also probably do wonders 🙂

Anyone else is noticing audio peaking ? I can hear really terribly peaking audio in the first 3 minutes of the video.

The ONLY reason I bought the M1 2020 Air instead of the new redesigned M2 was the keyboard. There was no way I would have been able to type papers, study, etc. with that keyboard. I’ve tried using external USB/bluetooth keyboards but it can be extremely inconvenient, especially when traveling. My M1 is insane! I was able to buy a refurbished model for $776 after tax, and I have not ZERO issues with it. I’ve always preferred PCs, but this Macbook Air was worth the switch.
