so these computers are getting almost 2xs faster every year now. What does this mean for real world usage? The apps we use and the websites we visit are they changing too? How much speed do we need to do things like make videos and use apps like adobe and affinity and blender? Just last year the M1 pro with 16gb of ram and 500gb ssd was plenty fast and how long will the M1 pro be a good computer? Exciting times but also confusing. Where will all this power and speed take us? And just to let you know always great videos!
I’m an AE animator still working on an Intel i5 iMac drooling over these speeds. It’s basically unfathomable to me the jump the silicon chips have made to everything.
YES My new favorite YouTube speed tests is Back! Hope you do the m2 Ultra soon!
No other channel on YT gives a real world comparison like your channel…which has helped me decide what’s right for me better then anyone else.
Thank You!
Base M3 Max next year will be lit!
I just need it to see this videos and LR
Great comparison. For 4k video editors, would you recommend upgrading the ram on the m2 max to 64gb or is the standard 32gb sufficient?
Because of the M3 rumors I’m going to wait to go all out on a machine.
I just bought the Mac Mini Pro base model to hold me over.
M2 Pro chip will hold me over for years to come if need be.
I may wait for an M3 super machine for a killer price.
I want at least 64gb and 4tb. to future proof it.
Does the m1 ultra use the full 128gb ram in aftereffects
It’s great to see the jump every generation, reminds me of the early intel days.
The fact that you used to have to splurge for a Mac pro to get this kind of power but is now available for $2k is kinda crazy.
They just sit there quietly and discreetly, and churn through anything you can throw at it.
My base model M1 Air & Mini are ‘far’ more power than I need, but Apple is knocking it out the park with these things. Love to see it.
Thanks for the video! They rock!
Can’t wait to get my M2 Max Studio with 1tb! The last Apple desktop I had was a 2010 Mac mini from when I was 5 years old. That was my very first computer that I used for many years and still have it.
Kudos to Apple for cranking up the performance with the M2. I’m mildly disappointed that the M1 Ultra’s interconnect is so inferior to the M2 Ultra’s interconnect. My plan is to hold onto my M1 Ultra Studio for 5 years, as it’s pretty sufficient for my needs. By the time I get around to that upgrade I should be able to get a refurbished 2nd or third generation Mac Studio for a really great price. In the meantime the one thing I do that actually pushes the limits of the M1 Ultra is Stable Diffusion. But the version I’m using is not yet optimized for Apple Silicon.
My god, imagine what the M2 Ultra will be like! I’m looking to upgrade from my 2019 i9 macbook pro. Haven’t jumped to M chips yet, as was waiting for Adobe to get their act together. It looks like Premiere and AE are stable enough now, but as I always import AE projects into Premiere and render everything there, I need to see how stable Adobe bridge is before I make the leap. I was considering waiting another year for M3, if I can last that long, as the thermals should be much better with those chips.
To me it’s all about playing back complicated timelines. Even the m1 MacBook Air was surprisingly good at rendering. I have an m1 pro MacBook Pro and it plays really well with anything but once you get to a stream of 4 to 9 streams of videos at 4k it struggles. Even with optimised media etc in Davinci. It’s clear I’ve out grown the m1 pro. And adding film grain or complicated colour grades it just dies trying to play back. And that’s true with anything other than a high end machine. But I’m really curious whether the m2 max can do stuff like that. Because everything you’ve shown (even after effects to a lesser extent) can be done on the m1 laptops. But great video though! Super helpful just curious about putting more strain on the actual timeline. Because you can get a coffee while it renders (or go out for the day on the intel machines) but for playback it’s really painful if you can’t watch back what you’ve created in real time.
M2 Max’s performance is phenomenal for Compositing & Editing 🙂 Do you think it will hold good for Fusion Studio in Davinci Resolve ? Awesome & Thanks Sir 🙂
This is why I think anyone who buys high end to future proof is an idiot. Buy what you need now, for most people the base model is good enough. You could have paid 4K for an m1 Ultra or 2K for a base M1 Max last year and another 2K for the Base m2 Max this year.
thank you for the testing video.
(im sure ill be corrected if im wrong) but i think both m1/m2 have same media encode chips. so encoding to h264/prores should basically be the same expect for ram difference. With after effects, once you render the timeline, then your export is basically just encoding to your preferred format.
I think in the past you have done ae timeline playback/ram preview comparisons, which seem like they would be more accurate than exporting qt from a timeline that has fully been rendered to ram.
Thank you, really appreciate the video 🙏
Is the 1TB SSD for the base model faster in terms of read/write speeds than the 512GB base model? So far in the M2 lineup that has been the case, just wanted to confirm it for this as I was planning to pick the base as well but if 1TB gives 1.5x the ssd speeds then will upgrade the storage.
When you are doing comparison videos, please label clearly which computer is which both visually and audibly which makes it easier for searching.
