Being pedantic, it is the European Union that has proposed a directive to create a universal charging solution for phones and small electronic devices NOT the UK. The UK left the EU after the Brexit referendum. I have not seen that the UK agrees though I can’t see how they wouldn’t. The proposed rules will apply to smartphones , tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld video game consoles.
Apple’s response was the usual nonsense:
“We remain concerned that strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world.”
MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) and member states may suggest amendments to the proposal. Only once the EC has agreed these amendments, will the directive be enacted.
This is something that ought to have been implemented many years ago (not USB-C but a standardised charging port relevant to the time). It is hoped that it will happen in 2022 but the relevant legislation needs to be agreed then enacted in all countries. You and other youtubers with reach could help make it happen. Research by the European Comission estimates that disposed of and unused charging cables generate more than 11,000 tonnes of waste per year.
Let me preface this by saying I hate everything that Apple stands for, and they should switch to USB C, and I’ll never but an Apple product. But Apple needs to grow some nuts and tell the EU to eff off. The idea that the EU thinks they can force an American company to do something is hilarious. But the beta boys running Apple will just bend over. There doesn’t exist a world where the EU would, or could, stop iPhones from being sold or used in Europe. Why doesn’t Apple realize that?
“And thee 11”
