The screen of the M2 Air is quite deceiving, when you are used to the XDR display and when you compare them side by side. This is the first reason why I opted for the M1 14 Pro. The second reason was the price. The M2 Air with 16 RAM and 512 GB cost the same as the M1 14 Pro with the same configuration here in Germany, i.e. € 1,959.
Thanks for this detailed comparison!
I really like how you include the m1 in your comparisons. It really helps in purchasing decisions. You are one of the best! Thank you!!!!!
the 14pro 32gb is expected to beat m2 air/24gb if photoshop file is much larger 17:30
Thank you for all the great details, i personally use the LrC workflows including HDR/Panaoroma so your details really have helped confirm my suspicions. I was set on getting the M2 Air/24/512 but got a 14M1Pro 16gb and am very happy i did, even with the extra weight. The extra ports give me that extra comfort and i just plan to upgrade to a 14M2Pro with 32gb at some point in the future when the need arises. The M2 Air seems amazing and i would have got it if i needed the portability but not a huge need at the moment.
Thanks a lot, very detailed, currently the m1Pro with 32g ram would be my favorite
Excellent as always Art! I was looking forward to this comparison.
200-300 dollars off depending on configuration at bhphoto
man is super confusing, dont change the colors for de machines!
Too much information in video unable keep in memory. Confusing
This is VERY INTERESTING! And as someone who paid $2800 day one for a 14” 32 Gb ram and 10 CPU, it’s giving me very mixed thoughts.. one one hand, yes, my machine is faster in most of these scenarios, but in some, it’s VERY CLOSE. And this is my issue with Apple – they are charging A LOT of money to people, and they are making products that are VERY closely related in performance across a wide $ range. To me, no configuration of an AIR should even come close to touching a PRO, otherwise, it’s not even a PRO. Second, when you have lower end products coming out RIGHT after the launch of your groundbreaking m1 pro and max reveal, already rival the performance of those groundbreaking products, where the heck is the incentive for people to keep buying the top tier??!!
Another great review. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the tests. 14″ M1 pro on sale for $1750-1800 is pretty compelling.
Should I future proof and get the 32gig x 32core x 1tb. Or get the 32gig 24core x 1tb. Mainly photo editing and I will be doing some videos soon. Coming from a 2017 iMac 21 inch.
What does this say about the m2-Pro and m2-max and about the future m3? What is the typical improvement on Intel generations?
The differences are not that big, so it might be worth it if portability is your priority. As much hate the M2 gets, it’s a nice bump in performance.
Hello! How do you see the performance of the MacBook Pro 14″ base model? A few months ago I tried the model with 10c/16c/16Gb, both in 14″ and 16″ and they were killer. I’m a graphic and web designer and I would give a lot of use to the Adobe suite, I would also use Capture One to develop photos from a Fuji APSC, and edit some video from time to time, 4K 25fps mostly, normal with some transition and a color adjustment layer (some basic, nothing very powerful), with FCPX or Premiere. Above all I consider the issue of RAM, but of course, the base model is on Amazon for about €2,000, and if I go for a higher model in the future, customizing it at Apple, the price would be of about € 3,200. Honestly, I do not consider the distant future too much, since I think that these processors are going to advance very quickly and perhaps in 3/4 I will renew it, but since I am going to make the investment, I do not want to stay short from the first hour. And on the other hand, it seems that the M2 Pro will present them at the end of year. Thanks in advance!
Hi Art. An excellent review again, as usual. I’m an amateur photographer and have been waiting, what seems like an eternity, for the higher spec M1 Mac Mini to arrive. My Mid 2015 15″ MacBook Pro Retina (16GB Ram 512GB SSD) is struggling and may not last much longer. We currently hear that the upgrade version can now be expected this Autumn with the M2 Chip. Fed up of waiting, and taking mote of your comments in this review, I’m going to bite the bullet and get the base model M1 13″ MBP. I’m going with 32GB Ram. Would there be any benefit for someone in my position to lay out the additional £200 for the next one up with the 10 core CPU? Keep up the great work. 😀
Thank you for this well done video! You mentioned that the apps are not optimized for M2 yet so the results might be different once they are. I thought that M1 and M2 are both Apple Silicon architecture, so apps optimized for Apple Silicon are automatically optimized for M1 and M2. Is that not the case?
there is any chance to get a full test with Luminar NEO M1 Max/ultra / m2
These are (for photographers) the best comparisons you can find! Thanks 🙏🏻
